The Medication Assessment Centre (MAC) / USask Chronic Pain Clinic (UCPC) is a non-profit organization that provides a variety of chronic pain focused direct patient care clinical services, both in person and remotely, for Saskatchewan residents. The clinical team includes pharmacists, physical therapists, social workers, physicians and a dietitian. The MAC/UCPC team contributes to the undergraduate education of a variety of health professional learners from the University of Saskatchewan and elsewhere.

Primary Purpose: As part of the USask Chronic Pain Clinic (UCPC), you will apply counseling approaches to deliver care and treatment to those with chronic pain. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to deliver the best care for clients experiencing chronic pain, play an active role on a collaborative team, and grow both their clinical and leadership skills.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Associate Director of the MAC, you will provide both in-person and remote (i.e., phone / videoconference) clinical consultations with clients who have chronic pain. You will work interprofessionally with our pharmacists, physical therapist, dietitian, chronic pain physicians (who is part of this chronic pain clinic team), family physicians (who will refer their patients), and other health professionals who are part of the client’s circle of care. This will include participating in case conferences, in which individual patient cases will be discussed by the UCPC team and other members of a client’s care team. Shift work will not be required.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide direct counseling and education, couple/family support and education, and client system support, to clients who are referred to the UCPC
  • Provide relevant assessments, care plans, and evaluation of all UCPC clients
  • Collaborate with other health professionals (within UCPC and outside UCPC) in the management of individual clients
  • Attend weekly meetings with UCPC team members to discuss clinic operations and clinical case discussions

Education: A Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Social Work is required. Advanced education in counselling, addictions, mental health, and chronic pain management will be considered an asset.

Licensure: A license to practice social work within the province of Saskatchewan, registration with the Saskatchewan Association of Social Workers, and proof of $5,000,000 Professional Liability Insurance are required.

Experience: Applicants must have a minimum of two years of experience providing counseling. Previous experience working in an interdisciplinary team, providing care to highly complex clients and managing clients with chronic pain will be considered assets.

  • Strong health profession skills (e.g., counselling, patient interviewing, empathetic communication, documentation, computer);
  • Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Ability to interact respectfully with diverse clients, faculty, staff, students, and community partners;
  • Effective organizational skills, the ability to handle complex situations, and manage multiple tasks with competing priorities;
  • Ability to identify issues and then develop and implement creative solutions;
  • Ability to work effectively in an interprofessional/intraprofessional, team-oriented and diverse atmosphere; and
  • Ability to work independently.

The appointment is established at 0.7 FTE. Subject to operational requirements, availability of funding, and continued satisfactory performance. The University may increase the hours of work, up to a maximum of 1.0 FTE
