Location: Hybrid (3 days remote, 2 days onsite – GTA)

Contract: 12 Months (Strong Extension Potential)

Our client, a leading Ontario-based electricity distribution utility, is advancing a next-generation Grid Analytics & Data Modernization initiative to enhance system planning, forecasting accuracy, and investment decision-making.

They are seeking a Planning Engineer (P.Eng) to support the evolution of modern distribution system planning capabilities — blending traditional power system fundamentals with advanced analytics and forecasting tools.

This role sits at the intersection of engineering, data, and modernization.

This is a modernization-focused planning and analytics role.

🛠 Key Responsibilities

📊 Planning & Forecasting Modernization

  • Lead and coordinate definition of planning and forecasting tool requirements (functional, integration, and data specifications)
  • Support development and validation of probabilistic time-series forecasting approaches (including Monte Carlo methods)
  • Contribute to feeder-level analytics modeling system needs at 15-minute granularity over a 10-year horizon
  • Support scenario analysis assessing uncertainty factors (energy prices, technology adoption, DER growth, etc.)

⚙️ Distribution System Planning & Analysis

  • Support system and feeder-level planning analyses (capacity, constraints, reliability performance)
  • Assess technical feasibility and economic value of traditional and non-wires solutions
  • Apply structured multi-attribute decision-making approaches

🗂 Data & Tool Implementation

  • Identify, source, and validate planning datasets (GIS/network models, load data, DER/EV connections, reliability metrics)
  • Resolve data quality issues in collaboration with internal stakeholders
  • Support tool implementation activities including UAT, testing, and defect triage
  • Manage vendor coordination at the technical SME interface

🎓 Training & Adoption

  • Develop training materials and job aids
  • Facilitate end-user training sessions
  • Support change management and adoption across engineering teams

🎯 What You Bring

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (strong power systems focus preferred)
  • Active P.Eng designation in Ontario (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Experience in distribution system planning and forecasting
  • Background in feeder-level capacity planning and load growth analysis
  • Experience supporting implementation of planning or analytics tools
  • Advanced Excel proficiency
  • Strong analytical mindset and comfort working with datasets and models
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills

🌟 Strong Assets

  • Experience with Power BI, SQL, Python, R, Tableau, or Alteryx
  • Familiarity with probabilistic modeling or Monte Carlo analysis
  • Exposure to DER integration, EV forecasting, or DSO planning
  • Experience in utility modernization or analytics initiatives
