Teaching Philosophy & Attributes
Beyond the qualifications above, the ideal Jarvis Educator embodies the following qualities and approach to teaching:
- Builds genuine relationships with each student. With a maximum class ratio of 1:6, teachers are expected to make a deliberate effort to connect with every student and learn their individual learning styles, strengths, and abilities.
- Is a lifelong learner. Actively keeps up with new technologies and continually learns new skills. This curiosity keeps the Educator relatable to students and models the learning mindset Jarvis aims to instill.
- Asks thoughtful, open questions. Uses guided but not overly prescriptive questioning to spark curiosity, encourage deeper thinking, and remind students to strive and push themselves further.
- Practises patience and restraint. Lets students try, struggle, and discover without rushing to intervene or defaulting to traditional, lecture-style instruction. Resists the urge to provide the answer too quickly.
- Focuses on how students think, not just what they produce. Keeps in mind that the goal is to transform a student’s way of thinking and approach to problem-solving — the project or final outcome is the vehicle, not the destination.
- Champions holistic student growth. Invested in developing students across every dimension — social, leadership, academic knowledge, the arts, technology, environmental awareness, and mindset.
