Position Overview
Reporting to the Assistant Controller, the Senior Accountant plays a key role in supporting accurate financial reporting and maintaining strong internal controls. The position is actively involved in month‑end and year‑end close activities, preparation of financial statements, and compliance with accounting standards. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, the Senior Accountant contributes to audit and tax processes, insurance renewal, and continuous improvement in accounting processes and practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare journal entries and balance sheet account reconciliations to support month‑end and year‑end close.
- Assist in the preparation of year‑end financial statements, including note disclosures.
- Support the annual audit process by preparing working papers and collaborating with external auditors.
- Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for corporate tax filings.
- Assist with the annual insurance renewal process by preparing required documents and engaging stakeholders across the company.
- Monitor Canadian accounting standards to assess and document accounting implications of key transactions and new initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, internal controls, and company policy.
- Collaborate with other business areas to identify and implement improvements in accounting processes.
- Participate in ad‑hoc projects and initiatives as required.
Qualifications
- CPA designation required.
- Degree in accounting, business, or finance.
- At least 4 years of accounting, audit, and taxation experience in a progressive role.
- Prior experience in a public accounting firm required.
- Strong knowledge of ASPE, internal controls, and corporate tax.
- Detail‑oriented with a high level of accuracy and integrity.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of collaborating with cross‑functional teams.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel.
- Experience with ERP systems is an asset.
Compensation
The base salary for this role ranges from $84,000 to $105,000 per year. Placement within this range depends on a candidate’s experience, technical skills, and alignment with role requirements. Candidates who meet the role’s requirements are expected to be near the midpoint of the range; the upper end is reserved for those with specialized expertise or a strong track record of success in comparable roles. This role may also be eligible for The Globe’s Annual Incentive Plan, based on a combination of company and individual performance.
