Introduction
The Delaware Environmental Laboratory is a full-service lab that tests and assesses water, air, soil, hazardous materials, and biological samples. The lab helps facilitate the management of Delaware’s natural resources and the protection of Delaware’s water resources. \r\n\r\n\r\nClick here for more information about the Environmental Laboratory in the Division of Water.\r\n
Summary Statement
This is a lead level position responsible for analyses using instruments such as LC-MS/MS, ICP-AES, ICP-MS, GC-MS, segmented flow, and elemental analyzers for water quality surveillance and to assess emerging contaminants. Plans, conducts, and oversees laboratory analyses that will produce technically sound and legally defensible data. Required to utilize information systems and statistics, create technical reports, troubleshoot and maintain instruments, develop Standard Operating Procedures and quality documents, and coordinate with coworkers to complete analyses. Conducts method development procedures to enhance the laboratory’s analytical capabilities. All work must be completed in accordance with EPA Methods, Delaware Hazardous Substance Cleanup Act, and State regulations.\r\n

Essential Functions

Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here. \r\nPrepares samples for instrument analysis, interprets instrument recordings and documents test results. \r\nUses analytical chemistry techniques including state-of-the-art instrumentation to gather data involving samples. \r\nAnalyzes laboratory data to determine quantity and quality of toxins, pathogens, chemical and biochemical constituents. \r\nPrepares reports identifying samples, explains testing methods and documents findings and conclusions of analysis.
Job Requirements
JOB REQUIREMENTS for Analytical Chemist III \r\nApplicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:\r\n\r\n Three years experience in generating and interpreting chemical test data by performing quantitative and qualitative statistical analysis. \r\n Three years experience in selecting and modifying laboratory test methods and procedures. \r\n Six months experience in conducting data review to ensure numerical input, calculations, formulas and interpretation of output is accurate, instruments were operating according to specifications, analytical procedures were followed and documentation is complete. \r\n Three years experience in physical, organic, inorganic or analytical chemistry. \r\n Three years experience in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation including calibration and maintenance. \r\n Six months experience in technical report writing. \r\n\r\n
