Job Description
Smolen Emr Ilkovitch Architects (SEI) is a dynamic architectural firm established in 1959 seeking a part-time Staff Accountant & HR Benefits Coordinator with 5+ years of accounting experience to support the day-to-day financial operations of the organization.

POSITION
The Staff Accountant & HR Benefits Coordinator supports the firm’s financial operations and employee benefits administration. This position works closely with firm leadership to maintain accurate financial records, assist with project accounting, and coordinate employee benefits programs.
- Schedule: Part time, approximately 16-24 hours per week
- Compensation: $34-48 per hour depending on experience
- Location: In-person / Onsite with potential future hybrid remote arrangement
RESPONSIBILITIES
Staff Accountant
General Accounting
- Prepare and record journal entries, account reconciliations, and support month-end close out activities
- Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy of financial transactions
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
- Review and reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts
- Coordinate payroll processing and maintain payroll records, working with the firm’s 3rd party payroll services provider as needed
Project & Job Cost Accounting
- Support project accounting functions, including project setup, labor allocations, and cost tracking
- Monitor project budgets versus actual costs and assist with reporting to project managers
- Work within Unanet ERP to manage project financial data and labor utilization
- Assist with revenue recognition and project billing support
- Accounts Payable / Receivable Review subconsultant invoices and ensure proper coding to projects and cost centers
- Prepare payment to subconsultants upon receipt of payment from clients
- Assist with client invoicing and collections support
- Help monitor aging reports and cash flow
Month-End & Reporting
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare account reconciliations and variance analysis
- Support internal reporting for firm leadership and project teams
- Coordinate with the firm’s outsourced tax accountants
- Compliance & Process Improvement
- Maintain compliance with GAAP accounting standards
- Assist in improving accounting procedures and financial processes where appropriate
HR Benefits Coordinator
- Collaborate with outsourced HR consultants to manage employee benefits administration including new hires, enrollments and renewals for: Health insurance, Long term disability, 401K / Profit sharing, FSA & HSA plans
- Coordinate annual benefits renewals and open enrollments
- Prepare the annual health insurance census and FTE reporting
- Assist with professional liability insurance renewal documentation
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
- Experience in architecture, engineering, construction, or professional services firms preferred
- Familiarity with revenue recognition for professional services firms is a plus
- Experience with Unanet ERP or similar project-based accounting systems preferred
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and general accounting principles
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Adobe PDF
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills, oral/written communication skills
- Ability to interact professionally with staff, clients, consultants and other external partners
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting or Finance
- Minimum 5 years in accounting / finance
- Experience in coordinating HR benefits is a plus
- Experience with financial reporting requirements
COMPENSATION
$34-48 per hour depending on experience
