Job Description

This is a temporary Full Time Assignment for up to Twelve (12) Months

Sinai Health is looking for a Lab Assistant to join out Microbiology team.

About the Department of Microbiology:

A collaborative laboratory operation between Mount Sinai Hospital and the University Health Network (UHN), The Department of Microbiology is recognized locally and nationally as a leader in microbiology. As a team driven by innovation, we are able to offer the full range of high quality microbiology services, from routine cultures and susceptibility testing to molecular diagnostic testing. New assays are continually being developed by our medical and scientific staff in response to clinical and research needs.

We are a prime reference center for both hospital and private sector laboratories. We offer state-of-the-art diagnostic services, methods development, research, and education.

In this role you will:

  • Receive and sort laboratory specimens
  • Accession, prepare and plate samples
  • Put away and order supplies
  • Prepare samples and reports
  • Centrifuge, aliquot and distribute patient samples to the appropriate areas for analysis
  • Prepare specimens for storage and packaging specimens to be sent to other labs
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

Mandatory

  • Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant with MLPAO
  • Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certified MLA
  • Graduate of a Medical Laboratory Assistant program or equivalent
  • 1 year of experience in planting microbiology specimens, and separating and labelling serum

Preferred

  • 1 year of experience in handing sterility and environmental samples and knowledge in Good Manufacturing Practices

Skills and Knowledge

  • Effective organizational, time management and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft applications
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with other staff
  • Knowledge of the public health laboratory information system
  • Knowledgeable in safety practices when handling biological specimens
  • Demonstrated proficiency in communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance history
  • In accordance with accreditation standards, employment is conditional upon applicants demonstrating proof of visual colour discrimination ability pertinent to the essential duties of the job
