About the job:
Save the Children International has an exciting short term opportunity for a Waliku Data Analyst (12m).
Waliku is a Save the Children technology team that provides bespoke solutions for digital data capture and analytics on learner education and well-being. Since inception in 2016, Waliku has grown from a proof-of-concept study and pilot to supporting Save the Children education projects in multiple sites globally.
At Waliku, we provide digital data solutions, which are based on local needs, and include a suite of
digital tools, analytics, and accompanying implementation guidance and support services. Through
our solutions, we expect projects and particularly educators, be it in formal or non-formal schooling, to have data insights that help them address gaps in learner education, health and well-being in a
timely manner.
End users of our tools could be project office staff, government officials, or counterparts in the
community- district education officers, school supervisors, school principals / administrators,
teachers, community educators, parents and caregivers. In connecting various stakeholders digitally, we also facilitate communication and coordination between them to meet children's right to education, well-being and achieving their fullest potential.
We are looking for a highly driven Data Analyst to support Walikus data-driven initiatives across
education programs. This role will play a critical part in designing data systems, ensuring data quality, and transforming data into actionable insights for decision-making.
Design and maintain data capture tools and forms aligned with program and field
requirements
Perform rigorous data cleaning, validation, and quality assurance
Develop and manage ETL processes using SQL and Microsoft Fabric
Build impactful dashboards and reports using Power BI for operational and strategic insights
Analyze data trends and translate them into clear, actionable recommendations
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support data-driven product and program
decisions
Primary Skills (Essential):
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Fabric ecosystem (Data Factory / Lakehouse / Warehouse
concepts)
Advanced skills in Power BI (data modeling, DAX, dashboard design)
Solid experience in SQL and data manipulation
Strong understanding of data quality, validation, and governance practices
Secondary/Good-to-Have Skills:
Exposure to data engineering concepts and workflows
Ability to develop and maintain Python / PySpark scripts for data processing
Familiarity with open-source analytics tools such as ClickHouse, Apache Superset, or similar platforms
Understanding of data pipelines, ingestion patterns, and performance optimization
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
1. Develop data capture forms with relevant validations to collect raw data using survey builders such as Kobo and Commcare.
2. Perform data cleaning and validation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of data.
3. Design and implement ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) procedures to transform raw data into usable formats for analysis.
4. Develop and optimize queries for data extraction, transformation, and loading processes.
5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand the key indicator requirements and business objectives.
6. Create and maintain documentation for data capture processes, data cleaning procedures, and ETL workflows.
7. Review data capture tools and dashboards for quality assurance.
8. Build and maintain data pipelines to automate data ingestion and processing tasks.
9. Conduct exploratory data analysis to uncover insights and identify patterns within the data.
10. Develop interactive dashboards and reports using Power BI to visualize key indicators and trends.
11. Support with the maintenance of the dashboards, its distribution list, ensuring new data is brought in as needed.
12. Support with creating additional features on top of the dashboards and database using AI to ensure users get insights they need for improving on their activities.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
Core Requirements (Primary Skills)
Strong expertise in data visualization using Power BI, including dashboard design,
storytelling, and stakeholder-focused reporting
Hands-on experience with the Microsoft Fabric ecosystem (e.g., Data Factory, Lakehouse,
Warehouse concepts)
Proficiency in SQL, with experience working on relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL
Server)
Solid experience with Power BI Desktop, including:
o DAX expressions
o Power Query
o Data modelling and visualization best practices
Experience with Power BI Service / Web-based capabilities, including:
o Dataflows
o Datasets / Datamarts
o Row-Level Security (RLS)
o Embedded reporting
Practical experience in data validation, testing, and cleaning methodologies
Familiarity with data collection tools such as Kobo Toolbox, CommCare, Power Platform /
Apps, Google / Microsoft Forms
Strong understanding of data ethics, confidentiality, and security standards
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Strong organizational and task management skills, with attention to detail and timelines
Secondary / Good-to-Have Skills
Exposure to data engineering concepts, including building and maintaining data pipelines
Ability to develop and maintain Python and PySpark scripts for data ingestion,
transformation, and processing
Familiarity with open-source or high-performance analytics tools such as ClickHouse or
similar platforms
Understanding of data modeling concepts, including:
o Dimensional models (star/snowflake schemas)
o Relational data models
Exposure to cloud platforms (preferably Azure / Fabric), including analytics and AI/ML
capabilities
Experience in designing or supporting MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning) frameworks
Knowledge of statistical analysis techniques (e.g., regression analysis)
Exposure to digital systems in education or social impact sectors
