Job Description
Job Description: Automotive Design Engineer (Off-Road & Armor)
Role Overview:
We are looking for a passionate Automotive Design Engineer to lead the development of our flagship underbody armor protection plates and off-road components. You will be responsible for the entire product lifecycle—from processing raw 3D scan data of vehicle chassis to creating production-ready files optimized for CNC bending, laser cutting, and welding.
Key Responsibilities
- Reverse Engineering: Utilize 3D scan data (point clouds/meshes) to create accurate CAD models of vehicle underbodies and chassis mounting points.
- Product Development: Design heavy-duty underbody protection (skid plates), bumpers, and rock sliders that balance aesthetics, high-clearance geometry, and structural integrity.
- DFM (Design for Manufacturing): Create detailed 2D technical drawings and 3D models specifically for sheet metal fabrication, ensuring proper bend deductions and welding clearances.
- Prototyping & Validation: Collaborate with the fabrication team to oversee first-article builds, ensuring fitment accuracy and making rapid design iterations based on physical testing.
- Material Selection: Evaluate material grades (e.g., Aluminum 5052, High-Tensile Steel) for weight-to-strength optimization.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Software Proficiency: Expert-level knowledge of SolidWorks (specifically Sheet Metal and Weldments modules) or Autodesk Fusion 360/AutoCAD.
- Technical Expertise: Proven experience working with 3D Scanned Data and converting organic scan meshes into parametric CAD geometry.
- Fabrication Knowledge: A deep understanding of metalwork, including CNC laser/plasma cutting, press brake forming, and TIG/MIG welding constraints.
- Experience: 2+ years in automotive accessory design, motorsport engineering, or industrial sheet metal products.
Preferred Attributes
- Off-Road Enthusiast: A genuine passion for 4x4 culture and an understanding of approach/departure angles and ground clearance requirements.
- Motorsport Mindset: Interest in performance-focused fabrication and body kit aesthetics.
- Portfolio: Ability to demonstrate previous projects involving metal components from concept to final assembly.
