Job Summary

ORGANIST/ACCOMPANIST (PART-TIME) - SAINT JAMES UMC - MARRIOTTSVILLE, MD

12 month position. 8-10 hours per week. Will work closely with the Pastor and the Director of Music Ministry in providing music on the organ and piano for Sunday services of both traditional and contemporary (praise band) styles, for in-person and virtual worship, in alignment with St. James UMC’s principles and church mission and goals.

Candidate will be expected to possess a high level of accomplishment in organ and piano performance. Provide supportive, flexible, and sensitive accompaniment to the Chancel Choir, praise band, and/or soloists. Demonstrate musical versatility, attention to detail, organization, and diligent preparation. Demonstrate strong sight-reading and interpersonal skills. Participate in one weekly evening rehearsal in addition to Sunday services.

Experience: Minimum of 2 years experience in a concert, school, and/or church environment.

Candidates chosen for interview and audition should be prepared to play two verses of two prepared hymns, sight-read a third hymn, as well as prepared selections at the organ demonstrating your technique, registration, and expression (Rodgers organ).

Duties

  • Provide lively and expressive organ or piano accompaniment for worship services, including hymns, preludes, postludes, and special music segments
  • Collaborate closely with choir directors and clergy to select appropriate music that aligns with service themes and liturgical calendar
  • Lead or assist in rehearsals with choirs or soloists to ensure cohesive performances
  • Adapt to various musical styles, including theatrical pieces, ensuring versatility in performance
  • Maintain and care for the organ or piano instruments, ensuring they are tuned and in optimal condition
  • Support community events by providing engaging musical accompaniment that elevates the overall experience
  • Assist in planning special musical programs or seasonal concerts that resonate with diverse audiences

Pay: $16,000.00 - $19,000.00 per year
