What is the Opportunity?

Are you interested in working as a Lead DevOps Engineer on the Global Payments Platform and DevOps team in Technology & Operations at the Royal Bank of Canada?

RBC's Global Payments Platform and DevOps Team is responsible for improving the efficiency and reliability of our existing CI/CD pipelines and integrating new tools or optimizing existing workflows.

As part of our team, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of payment technologies and the overall developer experience. We are helping to containerize applications and services and managing them through orchestration platforms.

What Will You Do?

  • Lead and collaborate with peers to develop code in line with strategic initiatives, as well as architect, develop, troubleshoot, enhance, and document components, as per the requirements and detailed design
  • Lead the deployment and scaling of microservices in distributed systems environments, ensuring that they are robust and can handle production load
  • Create and review technical design documents, understand how the design will be used in the code development process, and facilitate meetings to design, troubleshoot, and execute projects
  • Lead walkthrough reviews of technical specifications, programs, code, and unit test plans
  • Conduct thorough unit testing, often developing and leveraging automated unit testing frameworks, and improve performance of single functions through performance tuning
  • Leading the development and maintenance of infrastructure as code (IaC) for provisioning and managing cloud resources across multiple environments
  • Implementing security best practices within our pipelines and infrastructure to ensure that our systems are protected against potential threats
  • Architecting and managing distributed workflow orchestration systems and ensuring high availability across multiple datacenters
  • Mentor and provide technical leadership to team members on DevOps best practices and emerging technologies

What do you need to Succeed?

Must-have

  • 5-7 years of proven expertise in DevOps, SRE, or Platform Engineering roles with progressive responsibility
  • Expert-level proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, as well as advanced Bash scripting
  • Extensive hands-on experience in a variety of SRE languages and tools (Terraform, Ansible, Dynatrace, ServiceNow, GitHub, Slack, Elastic, Kibana)
  • Advanced knowledge of industry practices, with a strong focus on DevOps and SRE principles
  • Extensive experience in a variety of environments (Cloud, Linux/Unix/Windows and services/APIs, databases)
  • Proven experience with distributed systems architecture and deployment, including workflow orchestration platforms such as Camunda or similar enterprise workflow engines
  • Experience managing and deploying multi-datacenter, highly available distributed systems with focus on reliability and performance
  • Strong experience with AI integration in workflows and development processes, including context engineering and AI-driven automation
  • Deep expertise with GitHub Actions and GitOps methodologies for CI/CD pipeline development and automation
  • Advanced Kubernetes and OpenShift experience with production deployments at enterprise scale

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with progressive delivery techniques including Blue-Green deployments, canary deployments, and feature flags
  • Knowledge of Service Mesh architectures and advanced traffic management patterns
  • Experience with custom tooling development for developer productivity and platform automation
  • Familiarity with payment systems and financial services technology platforms
  • Experience with MLOps practices and machine learning pipeline automation
  • Relevant certifications such as CKA/CKAD, Red Hat OpenShift, or cloud platform certifications
