Job Description
Position Title: Agriculture Expert
Due to the operational nature of this role, preference will be given to

Background: The Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES) is an international and intergovernmental institution, owned and governed by its Member States, for the generation, application, and communication of multi-hazard early warning information. RIMES was formed in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, as a collective response by countries in Africa and Asia to establish a regional early warning system within a multi-hazard framework, to strengthen preparedness and response to trans-boundary hazards.
RIMES was formally established on 30 April 2009 and registered with the United Nations on 1 July 2009. It operates from its regional early warning center located at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) campus in Pathumthani, Thailand.

Position Description: The Agriculture Expert will support the development and operationalization of agriculture and agrometeorological advisory services within multi-hazard early warning systems and decision support platforms. The role focuses on translating weather, climate, hydrological, and hazard information into actionable advisories and risk management guidance for the agriculture sector.
Duty station: New Delhi / Noida, India (or as per project requirement)
Type of Contract: Full time, project based Contract
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Agriculture, Agrometeorology, Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, Climate Science, or a related field
Experience
● Minimum 3–5 years of experience in agriculture advisory services, agrometeorology, climate risk management, or agricultural planning
● Experience in developing weather- and climate-based agricultural advisories
● Familiarity with crop calendars, farming systems, and agricultural risk management practices
● Experience working with meteorological and climate datasets for agricultural applications
● Familiarity with drought monitoring, flood impacts on agriculture, and climate variability impacts
● Experience working with agricultural departments, extension services, or rural development agencies is desirable
Technical Skills (Desirable):
● Experience with GIS tools and spatial analysis for agriculture applications
● Familiarity with crop modeling and agricultural DSS tools
● Basic programming or data analysis skills (Python, R, Excel-based analytics)
● Experience with remote sensing and satellite-based agricultural monitoring
● Understanding of impact-based forecasting (IBF) approaches for agriculture
Personal Qualities:
● Strong analytical and advisory development skills
● Ability to translate technical information into farmer-friendly guidance
● Good communication and stakeholder engagement skills
● Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
● Strong documentation and reporting skills
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Agrometeorological Advisory Development
● Develop weather- and climate-based agricultural advisories for operational use
● Translate meteorological and hydrological forecasts into actionable agricultural recommendations
● Support dissemination of advisories tailored to cropping systems and seasonal conditions
2. Climate Risk and Impact Assessment
● Assess impacts of weather and climate hazards on agriculture and farming systems
● Support drought, flood, heat stress, and extreme weather risk assessments for agriculture
● Contribute to development of impact-based forecasting products for agricultural applications
3. DSS and Data Integration
● Support integration of agricultural datasets and advisories into decision support systems
● Collaborate with GIS experts and developers to develop agriculture-related dashboards and visualization tools
● Assist in development of agricultural indicators and risk monitoring systems
- Stakeholder Coordination and Field Engagement
● Coordinate with agricultural agencies, extension departments, and local stakeholders
● Support consultation processes with farmers and operational agencies
● Assist in identifying user requirements for agriculture advisory services
- Research and Operational Support
● Support analysis of crop-weather relationships and climate impacts on agriculture
● Contribute to development of climate-resilient agricultural practices and early action recommendations
● Assist in operational planning for seasonal and sub-seasonal agriculture advisories
- Capacity Building and Training
● Conduct training sessions and technical workshops on agrometeorological advisories and climate risk management
● Support capacity strengthening for partner agencies and operational users
● Prepare guidance materials and training documentation
- Documentation and Reporting
● Prepare technical reports, advisory summaries, and operational documentation
● Maintain records of advisories, analyses, and stakeholder consultations
● Contribute to project reports and knowledge products
- Additional Responsibilities
● Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor in line with project needs and priorities.
