**JOB SUMMARY**
**The salary for this position is the minimum of the range.**
For MPCTC certified Correctional Officers, starting salary may be up to $54,378 (with proof of valid certification, depending on candidate's years of experience and based on approval).
This position is primarily responsible for maintaining security within the Queen Annes County Detention Center.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
Provides cordial, responsive, and accurate customer service.
Makes appropriate record entries for new incarcerated individuals in the booking process.
Makes security checks.
Verifies inmate population count.
Transports incarcerated individuals for various official purposes.
Distributes supplies to incarcerated individuals.
Maintains logs and records associated with inmate security and rights.
Controls visitors for incarcerated individuals.
Search of incarcerated individuals.
Operates the security control center.
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES**
Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work activities; skill in written and verbal communication; knowledge of computer applications to successfully complete data entry and word processing tasks; ability to correctly use grammar, spelling and punctuation; ability to understand and follow clear work instructions.
**CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS**
Possession of a Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operators License (or the equivalent from another issuing state) or the ability to obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of employment to position.
**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) acceptable by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission for certification as a Correctional Officer.
**PHYSICAL DEMANDS**
Typically sit at a desk, computer table or make rounds within the Detention Center; Walks, stand stoops, lifts, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighing up to 150 pounds or more.
Reasonable accommodations may be made for some of these physical demands for otherwise qualified individuals who require and request such accommodation.
**WORK ENVIRONMENT**
Work is generally performed within a correctional facility that has a risk for safety at all times.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee periodically works with firearms.
The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of infection.
Subject to outside working situation with incarcerated individuals.
Noise level is usually moderate but may at times become loud.
**COMMENTS**
This position has been designated as an ESSENTIAL POSITION and may be required to report to or remain on duty when County offices are closed due to inclement weather or for other reasons.
An employee in this position may be required to work shift work, overtime, weekends ,and holidays and/or remain on standby for a call back to work.
Employees must conform to applicable policies and safety rules.
This position is one within the Queen Annes County Civil Service System. An employee must serve a period of twelve (12) months probation during which he or she may be terminated without notice, cause, hearing or right of appeal.
