As a Custom Furniture Maker/Carpenter, you will lead the end-to-end fabrication of bespoke pieces, overseeing complex custom jobs with a high degree of independence while operating in a fast-paced environment. Success in this role requires seamless collaboration with the internal CAD, CNC, and Project Management teams to problem-solve and engineer the best technical outcomes. You must be highly organized, managing your own workflow to meet struct production deadlines while maintaining uncompromising quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Design & Planning: Study detailed blueprints, shop drawings, and technical specifications to determine precise material requirements and optimal construction methods.
  • Prototyping & Show Wood Expertise: Advanced proficiency in show wood frame construction, ensuring all exposed wood elements are structurally sound and aesthetically flawless. Must be able to interpret shop drawings and independently build full-scale samples from start to finish with a master-level ability to fill in “technical gaps” using professional judgement, ensuring the final prototype aligns with the client’s vision and functional needs.
  • Precision Fabrication: Operate industrial woodworking machinery – including power saws, jointers, routers, and more, to cut and shape wood components with minimal margins of error.
  • Material Selection: Sourcing and preparing high-quality hardwoods, softwoods, and laminates based on shop drawings.
  • Structural Frame Engineering: Develop and construct high-durability internal wood frames using a range of different species including Maple, Oak, Ash, Poplar, and more. A technical understanding of upholstery and foam specifications is required including foam density to ensure frame dimensions and bevels properly accommodate specified cushioning without compromising the final aesthetics or comfort.
  • Prototyping Feedback Loop: Lead the transition from digital concept to physical sample, providing critical feedback to the Design Programming Teams on fit-and-finish adjustments needed before moving to full-scale production.
  • Bespoke Joinery: Assemble complex components using specialized techniques such as dovetail or mortise and tenon joints to ensure long-term structural integrity and visual appeal.
  • Design for Manufacturability: Consult with internal CAD and Programming teams during the development phase to suggest ”real-world” engineering solutions, such as wood species selection or grain orientation to prevent further structural issues or bottlenecks.
  • Quality Control: Conduct thorough inspections at every production stage to ensure each piece conforms to exact design dimensions and finishes.
  • Repair & Restoration: Assess and rehabilitate existing furniture. This includes structural repairs, restyling, smoothing gouges, and meticulous multi-stage sanding/re-sanding to restore or refresh a piece.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of woodworking techniques, machine operation, and safety standards.
  • Precision: High attention to detail for precise measurements and minimal margins of error.
  • Mathematics: Strong basic math, arithmetic, and geometry skills for calculating layouts and material costs.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy materials (up to 100 lbs), and maintain dexterity in hands and fingers.
  • Collaboration: Communication skills to work with designers and Project Managers to bring visions to life.
