Job Description
Join Proton and build a better internet where privacy is the default
Proton was founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN on a simple truth: privacy is a fundamental human right. Since then, we have built the world's largest encrypted email service (Proton Mail) and expanded into Proton VPN, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar - tools used by millions globally to protect their freedom, fight censorship, and keep their data safe. In some situations, Proton has literally helped save lives.
We are profitable, independent (no VC control), and selectively hire from the top ~1% of applicants. Our 700+ team members across 50+ countries come from leading organizations and elite academic backgrounds. We move fast, keep hierarchy light, and prioritize impact over optics. If you want to do meaningful work with exceptionally high-caliber people, this is it.
Purpose of the role
Most US journalists have heard of Proton. Far fewer understand what we have built, how many people rely on us, or why it matters. Changing that is the core of this job.
You will be Proton's presence on the ground in the US, spending significant time building relationships with journalists, editors, podcast hosts, newsletter writers, and video journalists. You will get Proton's story in front of the people who shape how millions of Americans think about privacy, technology, and the internet. This is a media relations role at its core. Think of it as sales, with journalists as your customers.
You will report to Proton's Head of Communications and work closely with colleagues across communications, product, and policy teams in Europe and the US. Proton's Communications team is currently spread across the US, France, UK, Germany and Switzerland.
This is the right role for someone who is hungry, naturally networked, and ready to take real ownership of a major market.
What you will do
- Build and own Proton's media relationships in North America, with a focus on journalists, editors, podcast hosts, newsletter writers, and video journalists who reach the audiences we need to win.
- Expand Proton's coverage beyond the tech press and legacy outlets. We need to be in the rooms where our potential users actually consume news and information.
- Tell Proton's story compellingly and consistently: our scale, our mission, our track record, and why a private alternative to the dominant platforms matters.
- Respond to media inquiries across product, policy, and reputation topics, working with colleagues in Europe to ensure accuracy, speed and protect Proton's reputation.
- Support Proton's presence at conferences and events, helping to secure speaking slots and media opportunities for Proton representatives.
- Collaborate with the broader communications team on campaigns tied to product launches, policy moments, and news cycles.
Who You Are
- 3+ years of experience in PR, communications, or media relations, with demonstrated success pitching and placing stories.
- Genuine relationships with journalists, editors, or media makers - or a clear track record of building them fast.
- Deep familiarity with the US media landscape beyond legacy outlets: podcasts, newsletters, YouTube, video journalism, and new media formats.
- A natural networker who is comfortable getting out of the office, taking meetings, and building trust over time. You treat this like relationship sales.
- Strong enough command of technology and privacy topics to speak credibly with journalists and field tough questions.
Nice to Have
- Experience working with or for a European company in the US market.
- Existing relationships with journalists covering privacy, technology, or policy.
- Experience with policy communications or regulatory environments.
What we offer
- Work that Matters: millions of people trust Proton with their privacy. We answer only to our users - not advertisers, not investors with conflicting agendas, not governments. The work you do here is real, and the impact is measurable. (read more about our impact here)
- A great Team: Our team is diverse, collaborative, and tight-knit with people coming from all walks of life, including many of the world's top academic institutions and organizations, such as MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, Cambridge, and ETH.
- Technology: you'll get the right hardware and the right software you need to do your best work.
- Learning & Development: we invest in your growth because sharp people make us better. Proton is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your career because you'll be thrown into real challenges, with real ownership, from day one.
- Employee Benefits: your wellbeing isn't an afterthought. We offer strong health coverage, solid retirement options, generous leave, and wellness support so you can bring your best self to work every day
- Stock Options: at Proton, we all have the opportunity to be owners of the company. From day one, you have a real stake in what we're building. When Proton wins, you win.
- In-Person Collaboration: Amazing things happen when passionate, smart, and purposeful people get together in the same room. With offices across Geneva, Zürich, Barcelona, London and more, you'll spend most of your time collaborating face-to-face with people who genuinely care about what they're building
- Food: Lunch and snacks are on us every day in our offices so you can focus on the work and not on what's for lunch.
- Transport: getting to the office shouldn't cost you. We cover public transport, bike allowances, or parking, whichever works for you.
- Flexible Working: you own your schedule. Set hours that work for you and your team - because outcomes matter more than when the clock says you started.
