Backend Lead

Role Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Backend Lead / Architect to own the design, scalability, and engineering excellence of the server-side systems that power the JioPC ecosystem. This is a hands-on leadership role — you will define the technical architecture, mentor a team of engineers, and collaborate cross-functionally with product, DevOps, security, and hardware teams to ship robust, high-performance backend services at Jio scale.

Key Responsibilities

Architecture & Technical Design

• Define end-to-end backend architecture for JioPC services including device management, user identity, cloud sync, licensing, telemetry, and content delivery.
• Design microservices and event-driven systems that can scale to tens of millions of concurrent devices.
• Lead technology selection, evaluate build-vs-buy trade-offs, and establish architecture decision records (ADRs).
• Ensure high availability (99.99%+), low latency, and fault-tolerant design across all critical services.

Engineering Leadership

• Lead and mentor a team of 5–10 backend engineers; conduct code reviews and enforce engineering standards.
• Drive technical roadmap in partnership with product management and business stakeholders.
• Champion Agile/Scrum practices, sprint planning, and continuous delivery pipelines.
• Build a culture of engineering excellence — quality, observability, documentation, and ownership.

Platform & Infrastructure

• Design cloud-native services on AWS / Azure / Jio Cloud leveraging Kubernetes, Docker, and serverless patterns.
• Architect CI/CD pipelines, GitOps workflows, and blue-green / canary deployment strategies.
• Oversee API gateway design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC), rate limiting, authentication, and versioning.
• Collaborate with the SRE team to define SLOs/SLAs and drive incident management processes.

Security & Compliance

• Embed security-by-design principles: zero-trust networking, secrets management, OWASP compliance.
• Ensure GDPR / DPDP Act compliance for data handling, storage, and user privacy.
• Conduct threat modelling and participate in security audits and penetration testing reviews.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with firmware / OS teams to design device-to-cloud communication protocols.
• Partner with the data engineering team to build reliable telemetry and analytics pipelines.
• Engage with third-party vendors and open-source communities to evaluate and integrate solutions.

Required Qualifications

Education

• B.E. / B.Tech / M.Tech in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field from a reputed institution.

Experience

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience with at least 3 years in an architect or tech lead role.
• Proven track record of delivering large-scale distributed systems (10M+ users or devices).
• Experience in a product company or a startup operating at significant engineering scale.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in Java, Go, Python, or Node.js (multi-language experience preferred). Languages:
• Spring Boot, FastAPI, Express.js, gRPC, GraphQL. Frameworks:
• PostgreSQL, MySQL (RDBMS); Cassandra, MongoDB, DynamoDB (NoSQL); Redis, Memcached (caching). Databases:
• Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS / SNS for async event-driven architectures. Messaging:
• AWS / Azure / GCP — EKS, ECS, Lambda, S3, RDS; Kubernetes (CKA preferred); Terraform / Pulumi. Cloud & Infra:
• Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, Jaeger / Zipkin for distributed tracing. Observability:
• OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, mTLS, secrets management (HashiCorp Vault / AWS Secrets Manager). Security:

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in IoT / edge computing or device management platforms (MDM, EMM).
• Familiarity with PC / OS ecosystem — Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS integrations.
• Exposure to digital rights management (DRM), content delivery networks (CDN), and media streaming.
• Contributions to open-source projects or published technical blogs / conference talks.
• Experience working in telecom, consumer electronics, or large-scale consumer internet companies.
• Certifications: AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Google Cloud Professional Architect, or CKA.
