Job Description
Position: Firefighter (Basic Life Support).
Responsibilities
- Serve as a Firefighter Driver/Operator/Hazardous Materials Technician/Basic Life Support.
- Assigned to a crew engaged in structural firefighting, rescue, and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) incident response functions.
- Drive and operate firefighting/rescue vehicles, participate in rescue operations including confined space, high-angle, and other special operations.
- Perform noninvasive emergency medical procedures to provide Basic Life Support (BLS).
- Maintain ambulance equipment such as backboards, suction devices, monitors, oxygen delivery systems, and order supplies as needed.
- Perform fire protection and prevention inspections.
- Perform maintenance, operational, housekeeping, emergency, and standby duties as necessary.
Requirements
- Appointment subject to suitability or fitness determination through background investigation.
- Completion of pre‑employment and periodic subsequent medical examinations per DoDM 6055.06.
- Lifting up to 45 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
- Subject to pre‑employment screening and random testing thereafter, including tests due to reasonable suspicion or direct involvement with an on‑duty accident.
- Mission‑essential designation; required to report to work during severe weather or other emergency situations.
- Uniform and personal protective equipment required on duty.
- Work 72 hours per week (144 biweekly hours); may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends, holidays, and may be subject to recall after normal duty in emergencies.
- Valid state driver’s license in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- Eligibility for Secret security clearance or access required for the duration of employment; background investigation and credit check required.
- Shift work required to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations; shifts rotated on a regular schedule.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association and American Red Cross required;
Advanced Life Support does not supersede BLS completion.
- Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation with Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training required.
- One‑year probationary period unless previously met requirements; during probation can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- Participation in DoD Firefighter Physical Fitness Program required.
Qualifications

- Specialized experience: one year that includes:
- Fully trained firefighter working to control and extinguish fires, performing search and rescue, operating hose lines, and conducting fire prevention inspections.
- Experience driving and operating a full range of emergency services apparatus.
- Experience performing basic life support functions and medical protocols (patient assessment, stabilization, CPR, AED, airway management, shock treatment).
- Certifications required upon entry or within 12 months of appointment:
- Firefighter I
- Firefighter II
- Hazardous Materials Awareness
- Hazardous Materials Operations
- Driver Operator Pumper
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)-Basic or higher (Current NREMT or State); basic reciprocity required within three months of employment.
- Airport Firefighter (must obtain within 12 months of appointment).
- Driver/Operator ARFF (must obtain within 12 months of appointment).
- Hazardous Materials Technician (must obtain within 12 months of appointment).
- Maximum Entry Age: 37 years (must be hired by last day of month when reaching age 37).
- No education qualification required.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre‑Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration; all applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
