Job Description
Canada Economics and Data Reporter (Ottawa)
Are you looking to excel in a company focused on growing and developing talent? This is the perfect opportunity for you.
We are looking for an Ottawa-based reporter who is good with economic numbers and can spot trends to turn into exclusive stories. The position will start off part-time but has potential to turn full-time by June 2026.
MNI operates across the UK, the United States, China, and Continental Europe and is owned by the Tenzing Private Equity group. We have grown by 30% in each of the last five years and plan to continue this growth for the next five.
As we expand our global coverage, we are looking for people who have demonstrated talent and success in all aspects of their lives. You will take responsibility for helping over monetary and fiscal policy in a country with a big story to tell.
Canada faces what officials call the biggest economic transition since World War II amid punishing U.S. tariffs, volatile commodity markets, and a housing market strained by shifting immigration policy. How Canada responds with long-term policies to boost sagging productivity and a shift from deficit spending on social programs to infrastructure and defense contracts is key in getting results. Our readers demand stories that put them ahead of the competition in deciding how to invest their money.
Principal responsibilities:
- First and foremost, attending lockups for major Statistics Canada releases including GDP, inflation, and unemployment, as well as Bank of Canada interest-rate decisions and policymaker speeches. These often occur in the early morning. There can also be lockups for government reports like budgets and other major policy announcements.
- Helping maintain Canadian and global calendars of economic data releases.
- Writing short bullet-point summary stories of other economic indicators, and longer analytical pieces each month about wider trends such as in housing.
- The successful candidate will be comfortable turning economic data trends into stories and writing accurate copy that bring Canada’s story to a global audience. Much of this work is in lockups and requires the ability to work under exact deadlines.
- Candidates may also be asked to write stories about economic reports, to seek out interviews with officials and experts, and to assist with U.S. economic coverage.
- Coverage may also expand to include Canada’s energy and commodities markets.
What we're looking for
- We want a team player who lives for details and who can operate in a fast-paced environment to accurately digest and present economic data.
- This job needs someone who will keep our growth momentum by finding new ways to bring valuable news to our clients.
- Understanding of Canadian economic data, including how that information moves markets.
- Solid writing, and communications skills to help produce exclusive stories.
- Degree in economics, journalism, statistics or related field of study is required. Previous business reporting experience will be an advantage.
- We value diversity and knowledge of both of Ottawa’s official languages is an asset.
- Knowledge of Excel and ability to quickly learn new applications to report data.
What We Offer
- You will be trained by and work directly with some of the most experienced financial reporters in the business.
- A fulfilling and challenging work environment.
- Hybrid working: Ottawa-based with flexibility
- As a full-time employee a competitive salary & benefits package:
- Statutory Benefits (in accordance with applicable provincial employment standards)
o 20 days vacation entitlement
o Provincial public holidays
o Statutory Canada Pension Plan (CPP) employee and employer contributions
- Supplemental Insurance Plan through Canada Life
