SUMMARY
The Carrier Rate Analyst is responsible for managing and analyzing carrier pricing structures within a Third-Party Logistics (3PL) environment. Respond to RFQ/RFP requests from customers/sales/Operations by gathering necessary information. Obtain rates from carriers and vendors. Maintain database for the department from various sources. This role ensures competitive and accurate freight rates across multiple modes (LTL, TL, intermodal, parcel) and up-to-date database to support customer requirements and profitability goals. The analyst will collaborate with carriers, internal teams, and customers to optimize cost, service, and compliance.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Rate Management & Analysis
- Collect, validate, and maintain carrier rate agreements in conjunction with management direction, requirements, and TMS system owners.
- Analyze rate trends and identify cost-saving opportunities across modes and regions.
- Work closely with carriers to resolve discrepancies and ensure adherence to contracted rates.
- Support procurement teams during RFPs and bid events by providing rate analysis and recommendations.
Data Integrity & Reporting
- Ensure accurate rate data in transportation management systems with excellent organization skills to ensure correct and final agreed rates and service levels are added and managed correctly.
- Generate reports on carrier performance, cost metrics, and rate variances for leadership review.
Compliance & Optimization
- Validate carrier invoices against contracted rates to prevent overcharges.
- Recommend routing and carrier selection strategies to optimize cost and service levels.
- Create, record and report on Cost Avoidance initiatives.
- Record-keeping for large database, meetings and department reports and processes.
Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Experience with freight audit and payment processes.
- Intermediate knowledge of MS Excel (workbooks, pivot tables, VLOOKUP, basic formulas, etc.).
- Detail-oriented with high accuracy in data handling.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong collaboration skills across internal and external stakeholders.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years in transportation, logistics, or freight rate analysis (preferably in a 3PL environment).
- Familiarity with LTL, TL, intermodal, and parcel pricing structures.
