Position Overview
Based in San Francisco, CA, New York, NY, Portland, OR, or Remote within Canada or United States, Mercury is a financial technology company that helps startups spend less time banking and more time building.
We believe the key to our success is thoughtful, scalable, and beautifully crafted design. We are looking for a Principal Product Designer for our Experiences group. In this role you will define and design best‐in‐class interactions, patterns, and product experiences across Mercury’s core products including the app, dashboard, navigation, notifications, design system, and more.
You will work across the entire Experiences organization, tackling projects that shape global design patterns and the visual language of our design system.
Key Responsibilities
- Take ownership of larger, horizontal opportunities that shape Mercury’s product—driving exceptional quality and setting the bar for the design team while inspiring better work across the discipline.
- Partner with other designers on high-priority and complex projects to help deliver outcomes and uplevel overall work quality.
- Drive design excellence across Mercury through visual design, interaction design/prototyping, and systems design.
- Collaborate with product teams and executive leadership to build systematic, high-quality solutions.
- Operate across the full design stack—from project specifications and workflows to detailed interactions & prototypes and high-fidelity visuals.
- Contribute to Mercury’s Design System ensuring it is both beautiful and practical.
- Structure navigation and information architecture to ensure all Mercury products fit together cohesively.
- Translate high-craft design into scalable systems and patterns integrated with product work.
- Mentor other designers by leading by example and elevating the team’s overall skills.
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in the design industry.
- Proven experience leading high-complexity projects with multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to leverage appropriate design artifacts (presentations, prototypes, etc.) to influence company strategy.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners to define product strategy.
- Expertise in designing whole systems rather than just interface elements, with the ability to rapidly prototype large-scale concepts.
- Hands-on experience across the design stack including UI/UX, visual design, and interaction design.
- Strong interpersonal skills with kindness and humility, along with a passion for mentoring fellow designers.

- Target base salary ranges for US employees (any location): $269,700–$337,100 USD.
