Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Associate Director of the McGill Office of Sustainability (MOOS), the Communications Officer provides communications support to promote McGill’s climate and sustainability efforts within the university community and beyond. The communications support mostly focuses on the McGill Climate & Sustainability Strategy, the Sustainability Projects Fund (SPF), and various climate and sustainability initiatives on campus. The Communications Officer creates strategies and communications content to reach out to various internal (students, staff, faculty) and external audiences through websites, social media platforms, newsletters, videos, events, etc. in order to position McGill as a leader in sustainability and incorporate sustainability into McGill’s institutional identity. Primary Responsibilities: Plan, develop and implement communication plans in support of MOOS’s priorities. Write regular content for the McGill Reporter and What’s New newsletter. Produce short videos and visuals to promote sustainability initiatives and SPF projects. Manage the editorial upkeep and the day-to-day operations of MOOS’s social media efforts (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn), website, and newsletter targeted at McGill sustainability community. Recruit and supervise communication interns, including job posting, interviewing, training, professional leadership and guidance, and performance monitoring. Provide advice and assistance to the Associate Director on all new projects coming out of MOOS and their potential communication implications and impacts. Collaborate with student leaders to coordinate communication efforts between MOOS, student societies, and student-led sustainability groups. Liaise with colleagues in central and faculty-based communications units and with the Media Relations Office to create and promote sustainability related content across the entire university and beyond. Plan and execute large scale visibility campaigns for the Sustainability Projects Fund. Use data and analytics to evaluate the success of the various communication tools, inform future strategies and maximize the impact. Research and review trends and best practices in all areas of communication, particularly when they relate to sustainability in higher education. Prepare or review documents (presentations, guides, speaking notes, etc.). Represent MOOS and its various ventures at internal and external meetings. Plan large meetings, special events and activities that contribute directly to the promotion of McGill’s sustainability efforts. Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities Experience in communications. Proven ability to write and edit content (presentations, reports, social media channels, etc). Demonstrated success developing social media strategies for a university unit (including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn). Experience in web design and creating compelling web copy. Graphic design, photography, and videography skills. Ability to tailor content to various McGill stakeholders (students, staff, faculty). Knowledge of sustainability or university contexts an asset. Knowledge of accessibility best practices. Ability to connect with students in various disciplines. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Demonstrated organizational and delegation skills, with the ability to set priorities and multi-task. Demonstrated ability to work under deadlines with multiple priorities. Knowledge of the McGill environment. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in English. Functional proficiency in French.
