Position Overview
The Telecommunications Technician 1 is responsible for the installation of communications cabling and equipment in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. This role involves hands‐on installation of Telecom Systems including OSP & ISP Copper, CCTV, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), Fiber Optic, and Structured Cabling. Technicians are full‐time employees with company benefits and are expected to work in sectors such as Healthcare, Government, Higher-Education, Federal Aviation (Preferred) and Mission Critical industries, while working toward becoming a qualified BICSI Technician.
Key Responsibilities
- Basic knowledge of operating hand and power tools safely and adhering to all safety regulations and procedures.
- Survey and document existing telecommunications infrastructure including copper and fiber cables, both active and passive components using electronic devices.
- Ability to sketch rack, floor and wall elevations.
- Previous experience in terminating, testing and troubleshooting horizontal copper (Cat 5, Cat 6) and installing various types of low‑voltage cabling.
- Understanding of installation, inspection, terminating, testing and troubleshooting of ISP/OSP Telecommunications Systems (Fiber Optics, Category 5, 6, 6A & associated equipment) including pathways, cable trays, cabinets, racks, telecommunications devices, prefabricated components and grounding systems.
- Lead the installation of cable from Telecommunications Rooms (TR) to work area outlets (WAO) while ensuring proper bundling and arrangement for easy termination.
- Possess a full set of tools prior to the first day of employment as required to perform the position.
- Strong familiarity with TIA & EIA standards and different color codes, with the ability to label and test horizontal cable as needed.
- Perform quality assurance checks to ensure cable installation meets all applicable requirements.
- Maintain a clean working environment and participate in daily job site cleanup while securing company tools and materials daily.
- Successfully install systems including backbone & riser cable (copper & fiber), plywood & racks, cable trays (TC, MDF & IDF), OSP & ISP, along with site grounding.
- Be prepared for up to 25% travel, including domestic and/or international assignments.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3+ years of telecommunications experience specific to OSP & ISP Copper, CCTV, DAS, Fiber Optic & Structured Cabling within diverse construction industries.
- BICSI certification required, at minimum a BICSI Installer 1 for copper certification.
- High School Diploma or GED required; must be 18 years of age with reliable transportation.
- Experience working in Federal, Government, Healthcare/Hospitals, Commercial Buildings and Mission Critical Facilities.
- Ability to pass a basic telecommunications knowledge test and demonstrate proficiency in reading plans and specifications.
- Strong communication, time management and organizational skills with a commitment to quality and safety.
- Provide basic tools from the provided tool list prior to the first day of employment and obtain security clearance if required.
- Physical ability to lift at least 100 pounds at one time, manage sustained 60-pound loads, relocate a 12-foot stepladder, work at heights up to 60 feet, and perform other strenuous tasks as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Security Clearance.
- Valid Passport and willingness to travel overseas.
- Additional BICSI credentials (e.g., Technician level).
- Manufacturer and/or Fiber Certifications.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
