Description/Job Summary
The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) accelerates the innovation and adoption of cost-effective technologies that position American industry to lead on the competitive stage in evolving global markets. ITO provides planning, management, and direction necessary for a balanced national program of research, development, demonstration, technical assistance, and workforce development to drive energy, materials, and production efficiency across the industrial sector.
The Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) is seeking an experienced candidate to provide subject matter expertise in the Data Center industry. The role requires interacting closely with research, development, and deployment (RD&D) projects that produce significant cost- and energy savings and improve the competitiveness of the Data Center industry. This role requires knowledge of data center development, operations, critical infrastructure, energy procurement, and/or utilities management.
The position will support the development and management of programs focused on developing new practices and technologies through the management of large federal programs and projects with partners in industry, academia, and national laboratories. This role may also require engaging with other programs at the Department of Energy and across the Federal government.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Subject Matter Expertise: Have a strong understanding of data center development, operations, critical infrastructure, energy procurement, and/or utilities management. Knowledge of energy efficiency strategies, onsite generation and storage, cooling technologies, waste heat reuse, and water use considerations. Familiarity with demand-side management, load flexibility, and emerging large-load integration issues.
- Strategic Planning: Contribute to strategic plans for technical research and development that advance the ITO mission, resulting in measurable and trackable savings. Support activities associated with the development, maintenance, and execution of an innovation strategy which includes exploring new areas of interest and participating in the process for and management of funding awards and projects.
- Program Management: Collaborate on the active project management of ITO awards to oversee a research, development, and demonstration portfolio of transformative data center technologies in the United States.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with DOE staff and contractors in a program of activities to build and maintain relationships with leaders from industry and academia. As needed, engage in public-facing aspects of the ITO Data Center industry program.
- Communication: Support DOE staff to prepare and present written and oral briefings and reports to senior federal staff, DOE leadership, external partners, and industry stakeholders.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Located in the Washington DC area with hybrid work arrangement.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or other relevant science and engineering disciplines
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience in the Data Center industry or electric utility including an understanding of data center development and operations, grid integration, energy procurement, and/or critical infrastructure
- Experience evaluating the system impacts of data centers and integration of data centers with the energy system
- Ability to interpret technical modeling results and translate complex findings into strategic recommendations
- Ability to assess and analyze speed to market, cost, reliability, operational flexibility, and other system integration trade-offs
- Strong written, organizational, analytical, and research skills, and a demonstrated capacity for creative thinking.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Comfort working in fast-moving environments and navigating uncertainty.
Preferred qualifications
- Master's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, or other relevant science and engineering discipline
- 5+ years of experience in industry or other related experience.
- Membership in pertinent associations is helpful
- Experience with capital project development
