What is the Opportunity?
Reporting to the Manager, Total Rewards, the Payroll Supervisor is responsible for the integrity and daily operations of the City’s payroll function. You will oversee the accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees, ensuring absolute compliance with Alberta Employment Standards and federal tax legislation.
This role exists to lead the payroll team and act as the organization’s subject matter expert on all things pay-related. From troubleshooting complex payroll discrepancies to overseeing year-end filings and T4 preparation, you will ensure our digital systems, including Workday—are optimized for data integrity. This is a role that impacts every single member of the City of Leduc, requiring a leader who balances technical mastery with a human-centric approach to employee support.
What will you do?
In this key leadership role, you will supervise payroll processing and drive continuous improvement within our systems. Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and supervise the daily operations of the payroll function, providing direct guidance to the Payroll Administrator and ensuring the accurate processing of bi-weekly payroll.
- Oversee complex calculations including wages, bonuses, benefits contributions, and overtime, ensuring alignment with collective agreements and organizational terms of employment.
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert for tax and compliance, preparing and filing all required federal and provincial documents (T4s, T4As, TD1s) and staying updated on changing regulations.
- Manage payroll system integrity, overseeing the maintenance of data within Workday and generating detailed reports to ensure accuracy in earnings and withholdings.
- Troubleshoot and resolve payroll discrepancies, providing timely solutions to issues and serving as the primary point of contact for employee payroll inquiries.
- Collaborate across departments, working closely with Finance and Employee Services to align on general ledger filings, bank activities, and organizational goals.
- Drive process improvements, identifying opportunities to streamline payroll workflows and implementing new tools to enhance efficiency.
- Support year-end and audit activities, coordinating documentation for internal and external audits to ensure the organization remains in good standing.
Who you are?
You are an analytical and organized leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment where accuracy and confidentiality are paramount. You bring:
- A Diploma in Accounting, Human Resources, or a related field.
- A PCP or PLP Payroll Certification from the National Payroll Institute.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in payroll administration, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or team lead role.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and provincial tax laws, payroll processing, and Alberta Employment Standards.
- Strong technical proficiency in HRIS platforms; experience with Workday is considered a significant asset.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex payroll or tax information clearly and empathetically to employees.
