Job Description

Your Job

DarkVision's UX Designer will play a central role in shaping the tools our data analysts use daily and the deliverables our clients rely on to make critical asset decisions. You will join a growing UX practice at DarkVision alongside a peer UX Designer on another team. Together, you will shape how user-centered design is practiced across the company.

Your primary focus will be our downhole product line (HADES), starting with the highest-impact analysis workflows and expanding into our next-generation imaging platform. You will own design decisions for user-facing interactions, working within product priorities and engineering constraints.

This is not a typical SaaS UX role. You will design for dense datasets, scientific visualization, and in-house domain-expert users that work under tight deliverable deadlines. We want to hear from you if you thrive in technically complex environments, are comfortable building a practice, and are driven to make a real difference for the people who use your software every day.

Reporting to the Software Engineering Manager, this role is on-site at our North Vancouver, BC HQ, where employees enjoy a wide array of amenities including a fully equipped gym, squash court, steam room, climbing wall, and more!

Our Team

To make well-informed decisions, Oil & Gas asset operators need a clear picture of the inner workings of piping infrastructure. The team at DarkVision makes this happen. Our experts from across the machine vision, imaging, computer graphics, and data analytics sectors have worked to create the most technologically advanced platform for pipeline and downhole diagnostics. Come join our team as we embark on the exciting journey ahead to become the global leader in industrial imaging.

What You Will Do

  • Improve and manage existing software products: You will work closely with the downhole data analysis and product teams to improve the UX of our existing software products. You will develop effective design solutions that improve product usability, reduce analysis timelines, and eliminate pain points. You will collaborate cross-functionally with the Product Management, Software Engineering, Data, Field, and Machine Learning teams to take new features from ideation to prototyping, user testing, and launch.
  • Design next-generation software products: DarkVision is building a next-generation imaging platform that will redefine how our Data Analysts interact with our data. You will be involved from the ground floor, leading product discovery sessions, creating user flows, wireframes, and prototypes, and ensuring the new platform is designed around real user needs. This is a rare opportunity to shape a complex desktop application from scratch.
  • UX research: You will identify product pain points and usability issues through interviews, workflow observation, surveys, and focus groups. You will use research findings to guide design decisions and lead usability testing. You will surface underlying assumptions and validate or challenge them based on your research and conduct foundational research to guide the direction of new software products. Our Data Analysts are the primary users of our software, and they work under tight turnaround deadlines with complex datasets. You will spend real time with Analysts to deeply understand their daily workflows, pain points, and priorities, becoming the voice of the user within the Engineering team. Your research and advocacy will directly shape what we build and how we build it.
  • Build the UX practice: Working alongside your UX peer on the In-line Inspection team, you will help establish DarkVision's UX foundations, defining design processes, building a shared design system for consistency across products, and evangelizing user-centered design principles through presentations and workshops.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Professional UX design experience.
  • Professional experience in Figma and/or Adobe design suite.
  • Experience in designing for desktop applications.
  • Experience creating and contributing to design systems.
  • Portfolio of work samples demonstrating end-to-end design process.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Intermediate to senior level UX design experience on complex or technical applications.
  • Experience conducting user research with expert or professional users, not just consumer audiences.
  • Comfortable working in technically complex domains where you are not the subject-matter expert. You learn by listening.
  • Able to influence without authority as you will need to earn trust and advocate across Engineering, Product, and Data Analysis teams.
  • Able to work autonomously, prioritize, and manage projects independently.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
