Description

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, in partnership with St. Michael’s Hospital – Unity Health Toronto, invites applications for the inaugural Professorship in Patient-Centred Innovation in Perioperative and Pain Medicine. The successful candidate must hold, or be eligible to hold, a full-time clinical (MD) appointment within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Candidates currently at the rank of Assistant Professor should be on a clear trajectory toward promotion to Associate Professor within the initial five-year term of the Professorship. The term of the Professorship is five years, with the possibility of a single five-year renewal following a successful review, in accordance with the University’s Policy on Endowed and Limited Term Chairs, Professorships, Distinguished Scholars and Program Initiatives.

The Professorship in Patient-Centred Innovation in Perioperative and Pain Medicine is based at St. Michael’s Hospital – Unity Health Toronto. Applications will be accepted until May 25, 2026, or until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, or a mutually agreed upon date.

Through research and scholarly activity, the Professorship holder will advance the Department of Anesthesia at St. Michael’s Hospital as a global leader in knowledge generation and translation in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, pain medicine, and related domains of critical care medicine. The successful candidate will be expected to establish and lead a research program focused on perioperative and pain medicine, with a particular emphasis on generating evidence-based insights that bridge the gap between scientific discovery and clinical practice. This work will aim to reduce perioperative morbidity, shape best practices, and improve patient outcomes. The program is expected to integrate principles of data-informed innovation, health equity, and patient and community partnership, reflecting Unity Health Toronto’s institutional commitment to inclusive, real-world impact.

The Professorship holder will be expected to build upon and enhance the Department’s existing strengths by championing collaborative, interdisciplinary research and establishing a patient-centred, transdisciplinary research program in perioperative and pain medicine. This includes fostering stronger institutional engagement along perioperative and pain care pathways, and cultivating strategic partnerships across the Department of Anesthesia at St. Michael’s Hospital, the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and broader University of Toronto research networks. The individual will also contribute to departmental and hospital leadership by participating in research council activities and relevant academic and professional committees.

In addition, the Professorship holder will collaborate with Principal Investigators, Clinician Scientists, and Clinician-Investigators to promote knowledge exchange and develop joint initiatives that support early-career investigators and strengthen the Department’s research program. The successful candidate will be expected to bridge pre-clinical and clinical domains, translating foundational discoveries into improved perioperative and pain care, and supporting the implementation of evidence-based innovations into practice. They will provide mentorship to junior investigators, lead graduate student supervision, and contribute to a dynamic training environment.

More broadly, the Professorship holder will play a key role in advancing a strong research culture within the Department of Anesthesia at St. Michael’s Hospital, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration across Unity Health Toronto, the University of Toronto, and national and international partners.

We welcome applications from individuals working in any research domain directly relevant to anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, or pain medicine, ranging from basic molecular mechanisms to clinical trials, health services research, and population health. Anesthesiologists with strong records of translational, clinical, or implementation research in disciplines such as critical care medicine, neuroscience, echocardiography, clinical pharmacology, perioperative analytics, or personalized medicine are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must have a strong research focus and hold an MD with an advanced degree (MSc/MPH/PhD) in a related field, with significant research expertise in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine, or pain medicine. The candidate must be eligible for the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. The candidates must hold or be eligible for medical licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Ontario, and for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or have comparable qualifications.

The role will include active leadership at national and international levels to advance research in anesthesiology, perioperative medicine and pain medicine, with a focus on improving patient outcomes. Excellence in scholarly achievement should be demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, successful grant funding, and evidence of sustained, high-impact research collaborations.

The Candidate Should Have

  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in pre-clinical, clinical, translational, implementation, and/or health services research.
  • Demonstrated productivity, scientific leadership, and excellence in collaborative, team-based research.
  • Proficiency in research mentorship and in laboratory or program leadership, including experience supervising students, residents, fellows, or research staff.

Preference will be given to candidates with active federal peer-reviewed funding (for example, Canadian Institutes of Health Research), or whose research aligns with one or more of Unity Health Toronto’s strategic research priorities. For more information, please see the Unity Health Research Strategic Plan 2021–2026 (https://research.unityhealth.to/about/research-strategic-plan/).

The remuneration for the Professorship holder will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary range of this position exceeds $200,000 CAD per annum. The position will be based at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto. The successful candidate is expected to join the Toronto Anesthesia and Pain Associates (TAPA) academic practice plan and to hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Additional support will be provided in accordance with the individual’s clinical and academic activities.
