Overview
Our customer, a leading utility engineering and construction services provider, is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support environmental compliance efforts in Stafford, Virginia. This role focuses on stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, site inspections, and coordination with regulatory agencies to ensure projects meet all applicable environmental requirements.
The position includes a mix of field-based inspections and office-based design and documentation work, depending on active project needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop stormwater management and erosion & sediment control (SWM/ESC) drawings, primarily using AutoCAD
- Review and approve environmental and stormwater plans, guiding improvements and required changes
- Inspect active construction sites to ensure compliance with permit and regulatory requirements
- Serve as an environmental inspector for SWM and ESC activities
- Act as a Program Administrator for SWM and/or ESC, as applicable
- Conduct SWPPP and environmental site inspections and document findings
- Coordinate with internal designers, environmental specialists, and construction teams to ensure accurate and compliant project execution
- Serve as a primary point of contact with regulatory entities such as the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Virginia Marine Resources Committee (VMRC)
- Support environmental permitting efforts, including Contractor General Permits (CGP) and Joint Permit Applications (JPA)
- All other duties as assigned.
- Required QualificationsCurrent or previous certification with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), or willingness to obtain certification
- Experience as a plan reviewer for Erosion & Sediment Control and Stormwater Management
- Experience performing SWM and ESC inspections
- Experience serving as an AS&S Program Administrator in Virginia
- Strong understanding of environmental compliance requirements for construction projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment
- Strong organisational, problem-solving, and analytical skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience generating environmental plans using AutoCAD (training available)
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Engineering, or Environmental Science
- Experience acting as the primary correspondent with regulatory agencies
- Hands-on experience obtaining environmental permits
Compensation
- $27–$29 per hour, depending on experience
