Job Type: Fixed Term Contract 12 months), initial term with potential extension or conversion to FTE

Location: 2 days Hybrid, Toronto, ON

Our client, a very well-known Federal Corporation company hiring a Sr. Sr SQL Developer for a fixed term contract opportunity.

Your New Role:

The Senior Database Developer designs, develops and maintains relational database applications to support secure, accurate and efficient data management across the organization. This role is responsible for complex database solutions, performance optimization and data integrity across interconnected systems that support credentialing, examination administration and internal operations. The Senior Database Developer exercises advanced technical judgment works independently within established standards and provides technical guidance to junior developers. The role contributes to system planning, testing, deployment and continuous improvement while ensuring compliance with PEBC’s privacy, security and data governance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Database Design, Development and Optimization

  • Determine technical requirements and develop database solutions that align with PEBC’s operational needs, system architecture and approved development standards.
  • Design, develop and maintain relational database structures, queries, stored procedures and application logic to support operational workflows and reporting.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, scalability and reliability, including query optimization and structural improvements.
  • Maintain data integrity across related tables and systems through validation logic, constraints and controls.

Forms, Workflows and Reporting

  • Build and modify advanced user forms that bind to datasets and variables, implement validation and action logic, maintain integrity across related tables, and support multi-step workflows.
  • Build and modify report templates, including binding reports to database variables and datasets, to support operational, management and internal reporting needs.
  • Ensure forms and reports follow approved design patterns and integrate appropriately with downstream workflows and reporting processes.

Testing, Deployment and Issue Resolution

  • Lead testing activities in development and testing environments, reviewing functionality, data integrity and workflow behaviour prior to deployment.
  • Approve database changes for release into live environments and support controlled deployments in coordination with internal stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot complex database and system issues, including those escalated through established issue-tracking or ticketing processes, conduct root cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Develop, test and maintain backup and recovery processes to support business continuity.

Technical Leadership and Collaboration

  • Provide technical guidance and review work completed by the Junior Database Developer, including code review, testing feedback and adherence to standards.
  • Collaborate with internal staff to clarify requirements, explain system capabilities and identify opportunities for improvement within existing technology constraints.
  • Work with external vendors or consultants as required to support database maintenance, integration or enhancement activities.

Documentation and Standards

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, user guides and internal standards related to database functionality and workflows.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of database design practices, testing approaches and documentation processes.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience administering and developing SQL relational databases and database applications, plus a minimum of 5 years of program or systems development experience.
  • Advanced SQL expertise, including relational design, data modelling, query optimization and performance tuning.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, developing and maintaining database applications that support operational workflows, including complex forms and report templates with validation logic and multi-step processes.
  • Experience leading testing activities in testing environments and supporting controlled deployments.
  • Experience developing and maintaining backup and recovery processes.
  • Experience producing and maintaining technical documentation and user guides.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel for documentation, data review and internal reporting; familiarity with Outlook and general Windows-based applications.
  • Experience providing technical guidance or oversight to junior developers.
  • SQL certification and project management experience are considered assets.
