Green Street Academy (GSA) is a public charter middle and high school in Baltimore, Maryland dedicated to preparing students for success in college, careers, and life through real-world learning, strong community culture, and a supportive environment that fosters innovation and belonging.
Located in a modern, state-of-the-art campus serving grades 6–12, Green Street Academy is expanding its arts programming by launching its first-ever choral program. We are seeking an exceptional educator and artist to serve as Founding Chorus Director—a rare opportunity to design and lead a vibrant choral program from its inception.
The Founding Chorus Director will help establish a program that not only teaches music, but empowers students to discover their voices, express themselves artistically, and build meaningful community through singing.
This role is ideal for an energetic, visionary educator excited to build something enduring with the support of a collaborative administration and engaged school community.
The Opportunity
The Founding Chorus Director will play a central role in shaping the artistic culture of Green Street Academy.
Program Development
· Build and lead a grades 6–12 choral program from the ground up
· Establish the program’s artistic vision and long-term goals (1-, 3-, and 5-year plans)
· Select and program diverse, engaging repertoire
Teaching
· Teach choral classes across middle and high school levels
· Typical teaching load: 4–5 classes per day (60–80 minutes each)
Culture Building
· Establish signature concerts, traditions, and community performances
· Help shape the school’s evolving artistic identity
· Collaborate with faculty on cross-disciplinary artistic projects
Program Leadership
· Develop the ensemble’s sound, culture, and performance standards
· Recruit and inspire student singers across grade levels
· Manage repertoire acquisition and program materials
Additional Opportunities
· Lead optional after-school ensembles or clubs (additional stipend available)
· Participate in school performances, community events, and artistic initiatives

· Interest in programming diverse repertoire, including classical, gospel, R&B, pop, world music, and contemporary styles
· Creativity and initiative in building new programs
· A belief in supporting students as both musicians and whole people
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Music or Music Education
· Eligibility for Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification
· At least 2 years of choral conducting experience
· Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
· Demonstrated ability to develop or lead ensemble programs
Preferred Qualifications
· Master’s degree in Music, Choral Conducting, or Choral Music Education
· Specialization in choral conducting or choral pedagogy
· Strong keyboard proficiency
· Experience working with culturally diverse repertoire and community-centered music programs
Position Details
Position Type: Full-time (BCPSS Union Scale)
Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM
Teaching Load:
4–5 classes per day (60–80 minutes per class)
Salary Range:
$60,000 – $118,000, based on Baltimore Teacher’s Union pay scale and experience
Additional Opportunities:
Optional after-school programming (clubs or ensembles) available Monday–Thursday, with additional stipend compensation.
