Our client, a prominent, stable, privately held real estate owner, development and management company with retail and multi‑family properties in the Metro DC area and Southern California seeks a hands‑on, high potential financial professional to oversee the accounting group. The well‑run company has high‑quality, Class A assets in urban‑infill, attractive locations with a long‑term ownership mindset. Currently, the company has an impressive $2+ billion portfolio split evenly between retail and residential properties. It is an entrepreneurial, highly collaborative group with a positive, flexible culture working in a hybrid office work environment. The senior management team is hands‑on, experienced, and knowledgeable with a strong track record of success. They have positioned the company for continued growth and positive cash flow through a thoughtful/conservative approach towards expansion through strategic acquisitions as well as improving the value of their current portfolio and selective development. Position
Reporting to the EVP-Chief Financial Officer, this role will be responsible for leading the corporate accounting function which includes all accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, general ledger management, internal controls, financial systems, accounts payable/lease accounting and property/development accounting across the portfolio as well as special projects. The Controller ensures the accuracy, integrity and timeliness of financial information and is responsible for maintaining strong internal controls and compliance with GAAP and applicable tax regulations. This position will have valuable exposure to all areas of the organization, including interaction with the Owner, President and CFO, all who are strong mentors / leaders. This person will have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a successful, outstanding organization.
Direct and oversee all reporting and accounting operations for numerous legal entities. Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes across all property entities. Manage the annual external audit process including preparation and review of audit schedules. Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff to support departmental goals and career development/progression. Oversee accounting for property acquisitions, dispositions, and development activities. Support the annual budgeting and forecasting processes in coordination with other departments. Requirements Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, CPA strongly preferred. Minimum 10 years of relevant accounting experience including significant experience in commercial real estate and partnership accounting. Comprehensive understanding of accounting controls, systems, processes, and entity reporting. Proven executive level leadership experience with the ability to develop talent, drive accountability, and build strong, collaborative relationships across all levels of the organization. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex issues to both financial and nonfinancial audiences.
