Job Description
The RoleGovernment Executive is seeking a Senior Reporter to join our newsroom covering the federal workforce, agency leadership and Congress. You will report on federal agency operations and management, with a focus on agencies such as the departments of Homeland Security, Treasury, State and Veterans Affairs, and the Social Security Administration, as well as how White House decisions impact career federal employees. You will also cover key developments on Capitol Hill, including oversight hearings, government shutdowns, funding and policy debates and legislation shaping federal agencies and the workforce. This position reports directly to the Executive Editor. This role can accommodate remote or hybrid work, but candidates must be based in the Washington, D.C., area.Our Ideal candidate is:Drawn to complex topics and wants to present them in clear and accessible languageCurious and enjoys reading studies, talking with federal leaders, managers and researchers and turning data into clear, engaging storiesRelishes working with a team of Reporters and Editors who bring different perspectives and produce high-quality journalismA confident speaker who enjoys discussion, whether over the phone with a source, on camera for a webinar or TV interview, on a podcast or in front of an audience while moderating events and conferencesResponsibilities:Break news and produce daily reporting on federal agencies, Congress and the White HouseWrite longer stories, features and interviewsCover oversight hearings, shutdowns, budget fights and other major policy developments on Capitol HillReport on how agency decisions affect federal workers and how government programs are runDevelop original reporting through strong sourcing across agencies, Congress and federal employee groupsUse data, reports and public records to produce clear and accurate storiesCover events and conferences and represent Government Executive as a moderator, panelist or speaker at live and virtual eventsQualifications:7+ years of journalism or related experience covering government, policy or similar fieldsStrong reporting and writing skills with a record of accurate daily journalismAbility to explain complex issues in clear, direct languageExperience working in a fast-moving newsroomStrong understanding of AP StyleComfort speaking on panels, podcasts and at eventsAbout GovExec:GovExec's data and insights set the standard for depth, accuracy, and impact for government leaders and contractors.
