  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of interaction design experience in product design or UX design.
  • Experience integrating and using AI in design workflows.

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience working in a complex, cross-functional organization.

  • Experience with 3D design environments, spatial UI, or immersive storytelling.
  • Understanding of the unique constraints of navigation-heavy user journeys.
  • Ability to maintain design system consistency within live, evolving platforms.

As an Interaction Designer, you'll apply user-centered design methods to craft industry-leading user experiences from concept to execution, working with design partners to evolve the Google design language to build beautiful, innovative products.

As a UX Designer, you will join the Driving Experience (DX) team. This role will be an integral part of the team's ongoing focus on visual guidance and disruptions, driving the design of elements within turn-by-turn navigation, traffic, alerts, and alternative routing.

In this role, you will solve one of our most critical user challenges: reducing driver stress by translating complex logistics, maneuvers, and real-time data into simple, glanceable interfaces. You will focus on creating a seamless, trustworthy, and effortless experience, especially when navigating complex situations on the road.

The Geo team is focused on building the most accurate, comprehensive, and useful maps for our users, through products like Maps, Earth, Street View, Google Maps Platform, and more. Every month, more than a billion people rely on Maps services to explore the world and navigate their daily lives.

The Geo team also enables developers to use the power of Google Maps platforms to enhance their apps and websites. As they plot a course for the future of mapping, they are solving complex computer science problems, designing beautiful and intuitive product experiences, and improving our understanding of the real world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $132,000-$189,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Identify critical user journeys and design solutions based on user insights, business needs, and industry trends that help achieve business objectives for visual guidance and disruptions.
  • Create a range of design concepts (e.g., mock-ups, prototypes, models) to express ideas for user research/testing in collaboration with UX researchers. This includes enhancing turn-by-turn navigation, mid-trip alerts clarity and actionability, and improving the comprehension of disruptions and alternative route information.
  • Improve designs based on UX testing, engineering feasibility, and collaboration across partner/stakeholder/UX leaders.
  • Drive design improvements for on-map elements such as Road Labels and mid-trip alternate routes (alts).
  • Utilize AI in your creative process and productivity and contribute to the evolution of the UX Design role in relation to AI and AI tooling.
