Salary Range: The full pay range for this role is $22.69 to $47.74 per hour, with a starting range of $25.00 to $38.00 per hour. Salary decisions are based on experience, education, performance, internal equity, and sometimes geographic location.
Scope of Job: We are seeking dedicated and talented individuals for roles ranging from entry‑level Technician 1 to expert Technician 5 to perform maintenance, repair, and operational activities on utility‑scale renewable energy assets, including wind turbines, photovoltaic (PV) power systems, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Candidates will be placed at appropriate levels based on experience, qualifications, and completion of internal competency standards.
Required Training: Each Renewable Energy Technician will attend a mandatory 3–4 week training and certification course at the start of employment in Albert Lea, MN, with travel, accommodation, and expenses reimbursed.
This position is onsite at our Branch Solar Site located in Coldwater, Michigan.
Responsibilities
The level of autonomy, technical complexity, and leadership responsibility distinctly separates the five technician roles.
- Technician 1 (Entry‑Level): Assists experienced technicians with maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs; focuses on learning and applying safety protocols; works under specific direction and direct supervision.
- Technician 2 (Experienced): Performs preventative maintenance independently; conducts routine troubleshooting, repairs, and minor upgrades; participates in the 24‑hour “On Call” rotation.
- Technician 3 (Senior): Performs unsupervised routine and corrective maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, and leads teams on routine tasks; may train and oversee Techs 1 & 2.
- Technician 4 (Expert/Lead): Performs unsupervised advanced corrective and preventative maintenance, leads major repairs, and acts as a subject‑matter expert; trains and signs off on the competency of Techs 1–3; assists with overseeing site crews/contractors in manager absence.
- Technician 5 (Expert/Lead): Performs unsupervised advanced corrective and preventative maintenance, leads major repairs, and acts as a subject‑matter expert; trains and signs off on the competency of Techs 1–3; assists with overseeing site crews/contractors in manager absence.
Shared Responsibilities (Applicable to All Levels):
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including LOTO procedures, and lead site safety assessments.
- Maintain company property and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Accurately complete all administrative work, including daily maintenance logs, work orders, time tracking, and warranty/inventory documentation.
- Attend all required safety and technical training.
- Maintain the highest level of system integrity and support site budget control by seeking efficiencies.
- Technician levels 2–5 participate in a 24/7 on‑call rotation for system monitoring and fault identification.
Fiscal Responsibilities: All levels of the organization must be fiscally responsible on the company’s behalf.
Qualifications
Experience: 0–1 year (Tech 1), 1–2 years (Tech 2), 2+ years (Tech 3), 2–4 years (Tech 4), 5+ years (Tech 5) in renewable energy or equivalent.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent for all levels.
Knowledge & Skills: Tech 1: Basic computer knowledge and ability to follow instructions.
Tech 2: Basic schematics, multimeter use, and electrical/mechanical component knowledge.
Tech 3: Deep competency in generation theory, electrical safety, arc‑flash standards, NEC, and advanced diagnostics.
Tech 4 & 5: Advanced working knowledge of wind/solar industry best practices, coaching and training skills, NEC and OSHA regulations, and system software competency.
Certifications: Ability to complete all required training upon hire (Tech 1); must meet Qualified Electrical Worker standards (Tech 2–5); competency in system software and industry standards for all levels.
Other: Valid driver’s license required for all levels.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Field Work: Techs 1–3 work 100% in the renewable asset field; Tech 4 may spend ~20% in office.
- Work at Height: Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and structures to heights over 300 ft (91 m) and work in confined spaces.
- Conditions: Comfortable working in extreme weather (heat, cold, wind, rain) and in an electrical‑mechanical environment with high voltage/stored energy.
- Lifting: Ability to regularly lift up to 35 lb and frequently lift up to 50 lb.
- Safety Restriction (Wind Only): Maximum employee weight must not exceed 285 lb due to fall‑arrest equipment weight restrictions.
