Job Description
Duties The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a firefighter assigned to a crew engaged in airfield and structural firefighting and crash-rescue operations and assist in reducing and/or eliminating potential fire hazards.
This position performs the following duties: Performs crash-rescue and firefighting duties involving air traffic or support operations where hazardous conditions are such that the expectancy for fire is high and potential for becoming destructive is great. Performs work at airfields handling aircraft (e.g., fighters, bombers, cargo, passenger) carrying large volumes of fuel, conventional and sometimes nuclear weapons, or highly flammable or explosive cargo; or handling a large number of air moves, or a moderate number involving pilot training, or other air moves with high crash or fire potential. Support operations involve extensive flightline repair work, hot pit refueling, or the storage or movement of large quantities of gasoline and other fuels.
Performs structural firefighting duties for a variety of facilities which may include research and/or large industrial complexes. Performs prefire planning by physically going through structures to become familiar with the layout, fire hazards, and location of fixed fire protection systems. May assist in the development of special protective services for structures imposing extreme hazards.
As a crew member, participates in controlling and extinguishing fires by operating hoses, ladders, and hydrants. Participates in regular training and exercises as required. Performs rescue of personnel and a variety of first aid measures to alleviate further injury and prepare the victim(s) for transport to a medical facility.
Uses direct pressure and/or tourniquets to stop bleeding, checks windpipe for obstructions, performs CPR, and/or provides other appropriate assistance. Participates in regular training and exercises as required. Engages in hazardous materials containment and control as a first responder.
Detects the presence of potentially hazardous materials; protects self and others by establishing a safe perimeter around the incident; advises the fire chief to notify responsible agencies and to call for assistance from qualified personnel; controls access to the area until the arrival of law enforcement; and uses, maintains, and decontaminates common hazardous materials response equipment and supplies including protective clothing, breathing apparatus, dry and extinguishing chemicals, and decontamination agents and equipment, and replaces expended chemical and elements. Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station facilities. Performs functional tests and inspections.
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment and housekeeping duties associated with assigned facilities. Complies with health, safety, and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work environment. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements Conditions of employment Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation. May be required to successfully complete a probationary period. Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance within one year of appoinrment.

- Employee is required to use all safety equipment and clothing provided by management.
- The employee is required to work a 72-hour week on a 24 hour on/24 hour off basis which includes weekends and holidays. May be subject to recall.
- This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random drug testing.
- This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions and falls under the respiratory protection program and hearing conservation program.
- The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required.
- Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
- May be required to work the Fire Alarm and Communications Center (FACC).
- May be required to participate on Hazardous Materials Teams (HAZMAT).
- Employee is required to be certified by the DoD or Pro Board Firefighter Certification System as Firefighter I, II, HAZMAT Operations, and Emergency Medical Responder (or higher).
Qualifications SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE : GS-05: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-0081-04 level or equivalent. This experience may have been gained in the Federal Service, Military Service, or other civilian employment.
