Role Description This is a part-time, on-site Certified Substance Abuse Counselor role based in Fredericksburg, VA. The counselor will provide individual and group counseling to clients with substance use disorders, including conducting intake assessments, developing person-centered treatment plans, and delivering evidence-based interventions. Daily responsibilities include maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation, monitoring client progress, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care. The role also involves providing education on substance use and recovery, supporting relapse-prevention planning, and making referrals to community resources when appropriate. The counselor will uphold ethical and legal standards, including confidentiality and documentation requirements, while fostering a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment.

Qualifications

• Current certification or licensure as a Substance Abuse Counselor (or equivalent credential) in the state of Virginia, with demonstrated experience providing substance use treatment.
• Strong counseling skills, including motivational interviewing, group facilitation, crisis intervention, and trauma-informed practice.
• Knowledge of substance use disorders, co-occurring mental health conditions, harm-reduction and recovery models, and evidence-based treatment approaches.
• Ability to complete thorough assessments, create individualized treatment and relapse-prevention plans, and maintain clear, compliant clinical documentation.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and de-escalation skills, with a commitment to culturally responsive, gender-neutral, and non-discriminatory care.
• Familiarity with electronic health records, basic computer skills, and the ability to manage a part-time caseload effectively.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field preferred.
• Experience in a holistic or integrative treatment setting and comfort working within a collaborative, team-based environment is highly desirable.
