Responsibilities
Corrections officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing safety and security for the public, staff, and inmates. They ensure effective custody and control, comply with policy and procedure, and use evidence-based practices to enhance communication and role modeling within multidisciplinary teams addressing inmate needs. Officers provide security over adult inmates at the institution and during transport, supervise daily activities of inmates, observe and record their behavior and movement to ensure safe and secure confinement.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or a GED equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Read and understand workplace policies and procedures; prepare reports and documentation.
- Lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Complete pre‑employment requirements—including medical screening, background check, and drug testing (including marijuana screening).
Additional Considerations
- Stable employment history.
- Military or related criminal justice experience.
- Preference for applicants at least 21 years old (waiver may be provided for 18‑20).
- Bi‑lingual and multilingual applicants encouraged.
