Lighting & Special Effects Technician – ALIZÉ – Resident Shows Division
Lighting, Video Projections and Special Effects
Full-Time Position
We are looking for a Lighting & Special Effects Technician to bring support to our Lighting & Special Effects team. In this position, you will be responsible for the safe setup, use and maintenance required for show readiness of Lighting & Special Effects systems and equipment. The Lighting & Special Effects Technician’s tasks include but are not limited to: running follow spot/deck cue tracks, maintaining cue track documentation, inspecting and maintaining Lighting & Special Effects equipment, as well as support the show needs during rehearsals and performances. The ideal candidate will have a team player mindset and should have effective communication skills.
The Lighting Technician will have the opportunity to:
- Learn and run follow spot/deck cue tracks, as directed by Department HOD, for performances, artist training, maintenance and special events;
- Ensure the safe setup, use and maintenance of Lighting & Special Effects systems and equipment used during performances, rehearsals and training periods by completing inspections in a timely manner;
- Use safe wiring practices and maintain equipment, in accordance with industry standards for safe operations;
- Assist with inventory, ensuring equipment and supplies are stocked in sufficient quantity to ensure the on-going needs of the production;
- Update all necessary maintenance and inspection records/documentation to ensure lighting systems and equipment are in compliance with Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group established policies and standards; (maintenance)
- Maintain cue track documentation and participate in cue track rotation, as directed;
- Participate in special projects, including the construction and installation of new show elements, and other projects that include Lighting elements or other needs that may fall within the department’s specialty, as directed; Maintain flexible schedule for such projects;
- Develop a thorough knowledge of Lighting & Special Effects department equipment specific to the production, in order to operate it safely;
- Assist with the cross-training program to backup console operators and maintenance Technicians;
- Adhere to and actively promote all applicable German occupational safety and health regulations, including DGUV standards, the Arbeitsschutzgesetz (ArbSchG), and industry-specific guidelines, to ensure the safe operation of all technical and performance-related elements of the production; participate in all required health and safety classes and emergency rescue procedure training;
- Contribute to a safe and positive working environment at all times by adhering to and following all Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group standards, values, policies and regulations pertaining to safety using equipment and established working methods;
- Assist other departments when necessary for cross-departmental support;
- Complete other job-related duties as assigned.
What does it take for this role? The following hard skills are the basics of what’s needed to be successful in this position:
- At least two years of previous experience as a professional Lighting & Special Effects Technician or equivalent training in a similar environment;
- Previous field experience with repairs, troubleshooting and diagnostics with a wide variety of theatrical Lighting & Special Effects;
- Basic knowledge of digital test equipment for troubleshooting and repairs;
- Comprehension of basic principles of:
o AC/DC electricity;
o Basic electronics;
o Pyrotechnics, LN2, Flame and Atmospherics;
o Computer operations, as it pertains to Lighting & Special Effects systems.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; knowledge of VectorWorks spotlight is preferred;
- Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays;
- A Beleuchtungsmeister certification is an asset;
- Qualified Event Technology Specialist (Fachkraft für Veranstaltungstechnik)
- Certification or experience in handling stage machinery, rigging, and safety equipment (e.g., Sachkundeprüfung, IPAF certification).
- High School Diploma and or GED required; Completed Ausbildung as Veranstaltungstechniker/in (Event Technician) or equivalent qualification in stage technology.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job including, but not limited to: climbing, crouching, kneeling, standing, lifting, sometimes for extended amounts of time; lifting at least 50lbs unassisted, etc.; Full list of essential functions will be sent in the offer. - Fluent in English, both written and spoken; Ability to clearly and effectively communicate via headset; with an international cast the operational language will be English;
