POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Business Intelligence Analyst is a senior technical and analytical authority responsible for guiding the BI team, leading meetings, defining analytic standards, and ensuring consistent delivery of enterprise-ready insights. Operating within Chesapeake’s Azure-based lakehouse and governed enterprise semantic model architecture, this role oversees complex dashboard development, advanced KPI governance, analytical modeling, and BI workflow maturity.
This role expands upon senior-level responsibilities by assuming leadership of BI ceremonies, providing technical decision authority, mentoring analysts at all levels, and managing complex cross-functional analytics initiatives. The Lead BI Analyst also serves as a strategic advisor to underwriting, claims, actuarial, finance, operations, and executive teams.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives; adheres to department policies, procedures, quality, and safety standards as applicable, and consistently exhibits Chesapeake’s Values and Behaviors.
- Provides performance feedback to direct reports; conducts regular performance evaluations and provides constructive feedback and coaching to enhance individual and team effectiveness.
- Actively participates and makes recommendations for personnel actions including hiring, promoting, and disciplinary measures in alignment with organizational and department policies.
- Guides and supports the training and professional development of direct reports, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical experience.
- Participates in cross-functional projects and initiatives supporting key organizational and operational outcomes.
- Leads BI team meetings, including standups, backlog refinement, intake prioritization, and analytics review sessions.
- Mentors and coaches all analysts on technical skills, data visualization best practices, and insurance domain knowledge.
- Architects, develops, and maintains complex Power BI dashboards, reports, and semantic models using trusted enterprise data.
- Serves as a primary analytics point of contact and strategic advisor for business stakeholders, providing responsive, customer-focused support.
- Establishes BI best practices across reporting, data storytelling, documentation, and model governance.
- Translates complex business questions into governed KPIs, metrics, and visualizations aligned to enterprise definitions.
- Acts as a Lead Data Steward for assigned domains, driving adoption of the business glossary and defining standard metrics.
- Performs ad-hoc and exploratory analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities across insurance domains.
- Uses Tableau for rapid, ad-hoc, and investigative analysis prior to standardizing insights in Power BI.
- Applies AI-enabled analytics tools to accelerate insight generation, automate analysis, and enhance decision support.
- Validates analytical results, investigates anomalies, and partners with data engineering teams on complex data quality issues and pipeline optimizations.
- Defines and documents report logic, business rules, and data sources in accordance with department standards; reviews documentation created by junior team members.
- Communicates insights clearly through dashboards, written summaries, presentations, and AI-assisted narratives to executive and operational audiences.
- Participates in and leads aspects of agile planning, backlog refinement, and ongoing operational reporting support.
- Supports company business strategy and departmental goals by delivering accurate, timely, and actionable insights.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Expert-level experience with Power BI, including complex dashboard development, advanced semantic modeling, and optimization of complex DAX measures.
- Advanced SQL skills and experience querying and analyzing enterprise data sets.
- Hands-on experience using Tableau for ad-hoc analysis and exploratory visualization.
- Strong knowledge of insurance concepts including policy lifecycle, claims, premiums, loss ratios, and reserving.
- Demonstrated leadership in BI initiatives, technical coaching, and facilitation of analytics meetings.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated customer service orientation and ability to build trusted stakeholder relationships at leadership levels.
- Experience using AI-assisted analytics tools to enhance analysis and business communication.
- Effectively utilizes technologies and tools, including Microsoft 365 and role-specific platforms, to support productivity and efficient work practices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Analytics, Data Science, Finance, Insurance, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Eight (8) or more years of experience in business intelligence, analytics, or data analysis roles.
- Proven experience mentoring peers, leading technical projects, or providing technical decision authority.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working within Azure-based data platforms and enterprise lakehouse architectures.
- Experience with governed semantic models and data stewardship tools (e.g., Microsoft Purview).
- Prior experience supporting analytics within an insurance or financial services organization.
