CBC News is looking for a full-time, permanent senior reporter based in Regina to cover Saskatchewan news for national and local audiences.
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic journalist who is passionate about daily news and has exceptional video, audio and text storytelling skills.
You are a story driver, someone who is hungry to file and eager to push our newsroom to tell the stories that matter to our audiences. You are curious and full of story ideas - there is no such thing as a slow news day in your mind. You understand the diverse and changing population in Saskatchewan and the importance of reflecting all communities in our content. You live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
As a senior reporter, you demonstrate sophisticated writing and analytical ability as well as editorial leadership. Excellent presentation skills are a must, as you will be researching, writing and packaging on-demand content for national digital, social, radio and television programs and platforms. You have the ability to go live when needed – on streaming, television, radio and on digital live pages.
All your work will be governed by CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.
This job is currently Monday to Friday but weekend work could become part of the schedule. There is a requirement that the person in this role work full-time on site (in the office, and in the field). Overtime hours should be expected.
Key tasks:
- Pitch stories every day;
- Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives;
- Go live when the story demands it – on video, audio and through text (live pages);
- Produce original content and be responsive to stories that are emerging, ongoing. Respond to breaking news.
- Write scripts and file stories ranging from daily news to longer-form pieces and features as required for both digital and broadcast platforms;
- Cover news that is relevant to our target audiences;
- Research and gather information. Analyze complex issues from specialized sources to enhance the understanding of CBC audiences;
- Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.
- Work collaboratively with local and network newsrooms, be a leader when it comes to driving your stories;
- Recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage;
Your profile:
- Proven ability in the field and knowledge of the news media industry;
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of, and connection to a wide range of underrepresented communities across Saskatchewan;
- 10 years of comparable and relevant experience preferred;
- Exceptional reporting, memorable writing and digital storytelling;
- Critical mind;
- Excellent interviewing skills;
- Strong presentation skills for broadcast. Excellent live reporting skills;
- Proven ability to use social media platforms to both research and expand the reach of our stories;
- Excellent grasp of both regional and national affairs;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; a standout colleague;
- Ability to work with a variety of teams;
- Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment;
- Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously;
- Excellent organization skills and ability to meet deadlines;
- Ability to work flexible hours and do overtime as needed;
- Knowledge of the public broadcaster's role, responsibilities and journalistic standards;
- Must possess a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company;
- University degree in journalism or equivalent preferred;
