CBC Thunder Bay is looking for an experienced Reporter/Editor to lead our morning radio newscasts. This position is to backfill a one-year maternity leave, working Monday to Friday.
As the newsreader on Superior Morning, you play an integral editorial role in preparing and presenting the news. You thrive on setting the news agenda for the day, providing critical survival information to audiences in the city and across the region.
You know and understand Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario and what’s important to the people who live here. You are resourceful in your ability to find original and breaking news, and you can present it in a clear and concise manner. You are adept at identifying and cutting audio, presenting a complex story in simple terms, and working independently in a fast-paced environment filled with deadlines.
You are also responsible for identifying compelling, newsy current affairs stories, scripting interviews and presenting emotional human stories from a diverse range of people. You are committed to multi-platform journalism and will step in to help the newsroom team tell stories on all platforms.
Key Tasks:
- Pitch and chase original ideas that set the agenda in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ont.
- Interview sources and write news stories for broadcast and digital platforms.
- Package, prepare and present radio newscasts and bulletins.
- Edit and vet stories written by team members when needed.
- Experience in identifying potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations, and ability to act on them.
- Respond confidently and calmly in a breaking news situation, and consistently deliver under the daily pressures of a busy newsroom.
- Communicate and collaborate with AM newsreaders in other CBC locations to share material and peer vet material, when needed.
- Gather audio and video material in the field, edit and package it to share with the audience on any required platforms.
Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- Demonstrated understanding and awareness of issues that matter to the people of Thunder Bay and northwestern Ontario
- Excellent journalistic decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Excellent audio presentation skills and an engaging on-air presence.
- Ability to read the news on air and present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.
- Ability to self-operate a studio board during a live newscast.
- Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and deadlines, reacting quickly and skilfully to changing priorities and breaking news.
- Thorough knowledge of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
- Strong writing and script-editing skills.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Strong desire to live and promote the values of equity, inclusion and a respectful work culture.
- Creative, flexible, and self-motivated.
- Journalism degree or equivalent preferred.
- Four years of comparable and relevant experience that demonstrates knowledge of the broadcasting industry preferred.
- Ability to work a variety of shifts including early mornings.
- Must possess a valid driver's license as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
- Must work from the CBC Thunder Bay station every day
