About the Role
You will lead our morning radio newscasts as the newsreader on Superior Morning, preparing and presenting news for Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. The role includes setting the news agenda, sourcing original and breaking news, scripting and delivering human stories, and supporting multi‑platform journalism across all CBC newsroom platforms.
Key Tasks
- Pitch and chase original ideas that set the agenda in Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario.
- Interview sources and write news stories for broadcast and digital platforms.
- Package, prepare and present radio newscasts and bulletins.
- Edit and review stories written by team members when needed.
- Identify potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations, and act accordingly.
- Respond confidently and calmly in breaking news situations, consistently delivering under daily newsroom pressures.
- Communicate and collaborate with AM newsreaders in other CBC locations to share material and vet content when needed.
- Gather audio and video material in the field, edit, and package it for audience across required platforms.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated understanding and awareness of issues that matter to the people of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario.
- Excellent journalistic decision‑making skills.
- Excellent communication and on‑air presentation skills.
- Ability to read the news on air and present material with credibility and authority in live events and breaking news.
- Ability to operate a studio board during a live newscast.
- Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and deadlines, reacting quickly to changing priorities.
- Thorough knowledge of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
- Strong writing and script‑editing skills.
- Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
- Strong desire to live and promote the values of equity, inclusion and a respectful work culture.
- Creative, flexible, and self‑motivated.
- Journalism degree or equivalent preferred.
- Four years of comparable and relevant broadcasting industry experience preferred.
- Ability to work a variety of shifts, including early mornings.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets CBC/Radio‑Canada’s insurance company requirements.
- Must work from the CBC Thunder Bay station every day.
