Job Description

Cardinal Engineering is seeking highly motivated and experienced engineers to join our team. We are looking for individuals with backgrounds in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Marine, Aerospace, Control Systems Engineering, or related disciplines to serve as the Software and Certification Manager for the VIRGINIA Class Submarine Ship Control System. Experience in submarine maneuvering, hydrodynamics, control systems, marine engineering, and naval engineering is highly desirable.

Selected candidates will play a key role in the support of various new construction software development and certification activities for new construction Virginia Class Submarines. You will join Cardinal Engineering’s Digital and Control Systems Branch in our Systems Engineering Group. Responsibilities will include managing oversight of software development tasking and execution, including associated issue resolution; execution of ship control system certification processes; and technical and administrative review of fly-by-wire ship control system in compliance with the requirements of the fly-by-wire ship control system requirements manual. Additional responsibilities include maintaining individual Standard Operating Procedures to clearly document the routing, review, concurrence, approval process and authority for fly-by-wire ship control system deliverables.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain oversight of all software builds developed by the design yard for new construction submarines, including associated issue resolution.
  • Execution of ship control system certification processes.
  • Ensure technical and administrative reviews of fly-by-wire ship control system correspondence.
  • Update and maintain Standard Operating Procedures to clearly document routing, review, concurrence, approval process and programmatic authority for fly-by-wire ship control system deliverables.
  • Attend monthly ship control system System Integration team meetings.
  • Maintain Virginia Class Submarine ship control system certification Objective Quality Evidence to support design certification for new construction software/hardware builds.
  • Serve as a consultant in all matters pertaining to ship control software development, configuration management, and design certification.
  • Apply root cause analysis techniques to fundamentally understand and resolve issues.
  • Brief leadership and make recommendations based upon developed or coordinated solutions.

Work Environment

  • Location: Based out of our Washington D.C. office.
  • Work Setting: The work environment will be determined by customer requirements and may include on-site at the customer location, hybrid, or remote work.
  • Travel: Occasional travel to customer facilities is required (less than 25%).
  • Security Clearance: Candidates must US Citizens and be able to obtain and hold a SECRET security clearance.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Marine, Aerospace, Control Systems Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Equivalent experience is considered including direct submarine experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Ability to apply root cause analysis techniques to fundamentally understand and resolve issues.
  • Basic knowledge of submarine construction, modernization, or operations.
  • Excellent written, oral, and organizational skills.
  • Fast learner, and someone who can communicate well with numerous stakeholders, including with leadership to make recommendations based upon solutions you have developed or coordinated.
  • Experience with U.S. Navy Submarine fly-by-wire and ship control systems.
  • Critical thinking skills to navigate complex requirements and processes.
  • Ability to work well in diverse teams, build partnerships, and resolve conflicts.
  • Ability to navigate complex situations, identify issues, and provide recommendations for resolving practical problems.
  • Ability to adapt, innovate, and remain resilient in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary: $110,000–$180,000, commensurate with experience.
