Job Description

Bryn Mawr College invites applicants for a full-time Chemistry Lab Assistant, reporting to the Organic Chemistry Lab Coordinator during the academic year and to the General Chemistry Summer Lab Coordinator during summer sessions. The Chemistry Lab Assistant's primary duties may include, but are not limited to, serving as a laboratory assistant for 5-6 sections of Organic Chemistry teaching lab during the academic year and in the General Chemistry labs during the two summer sessions. This work includes assisting with preparing chemicals and materials for teaching labs; assisting students with experiments during lab meetings; processing spectroscopic data on students' samples, using scientific equipment including NMR and GCMS; grading students' lab assignments; and holding regular office hours. In addition, this role would refill liquid nitrogen in the NMR spectrometer on a weekly basis, order solvents for the chemistry department, and potentially assist with managing the chemical inventory.

  • Willingness and eagerness to learn and continue to seek training, as appropriate.
  • General aptitude for and expertise with scientific equipment, especially NMR spectroscopy.
  • Must be able to perform duties in labs and storage spaces involving reaching; lifting; packing/unpacking; assembling; loading/unloading lab supplies from benches, tables, and carts; cleaning equipment; cleaning glassware in sinks; storing equipment and supplies in cupboards and on shelves and lab benches.
  • Must be able to carry 30 pounds over short distances.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 1-2 years of relevant experience.
  • A degree in Chemistry, biochemistry, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Other related and comparable education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience conducting experiments in a chemistry laboratory (research, teaching, and/or industrial).
  • Experience with organic chemistry research and teaching assistant experience is desirable.
  • Successful completion of satisfactory background checks is required.
