Vice President, Data Strategy and Data Services
Biotechnology Innovation OrganizationJob Description
BIO is the premier biotechnology advocacy organization representing biotech companies, industry leaders, and state biotech associations in the United States and more than 35 countries around the globe. BIO members range from biotech start-ups to some of the world’s largest biopharmaceutical companies – all united by the same goal: to develop medical and scientific breakthroughs that prevent and fight disease, restore health, and improve patients’ lives. BIO also organizes the BIO International Convention and a series of annual conferences that drive partnerships, investment, and progress within the sector.
BIO is building the data infrastructure that will define how we serve members, grow events, and create personalized digital experiences at scale. This role owns that foundation.
The Vice President of Data Strategy and Data Services will set the vision and execute the roadmap for data unification across BIO’s member, event, and engagement platforms. You’ll build and lead a data services group responsible for data hygiene, acquisition, and enrichment — and serve as the primary integration owner across third-party platforms and internal systems.
This is a strategic and hands-on role. The right person knows how associations work, understands the platforms that power them, and can translate data complexity into business outcomes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Data strategy: Define and drive the multi-year roadmap for data unification, governance, and quality across BIO’s member and event data.
- Integration leadership: Serve as the primary point of contact for all data integrations, including Salesforce, Maritz, and Map Your Show. Own vendor relationships, integration design, and data flow architecture.
- Data services team: Build, manage, and develop the data services group, covering data hygiene, enrichment, and acquisition programs.
- Governance: Establish standards for data quality, identity resolution, and cross-functional data access.
- Business partnership: Work directly with membership, events, and marketing stakeholders to align data capabilities with revenue and engagement goals.
- Establishes strategic objectives for data utilization to guide the design and application of data architecture and data governance frameworks.
- Continuously evaluates and refines data strategies to adapt to evolving business needs and technological advancements.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in information systems, computer science, data science, business analytics, or a related field or equivalent experience required.
- Master’s degree (MBA or MS) in a relevant discipline preferred.
- 10+ years of experience
- Certifications in Salesforce Certified Administrator or Architect; data governance or data management credentials (CDMP, DGSP, or equivalent) preferred.
- Proven experience in a senior data or technology leadership role within an association, nonprofit, or membership-based organization.
- Direct, hands-on experience with Salesforce CRM, including data model design and integration architecture.
- Demonstrated familiarity with event technology platforms, specifically Maritz and Map Your Show.
- A track record of building and leading data teams, not just managing vendors.
- Ability to operate at the strategic level with executives and at the technical level with engineers and data analysts.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA’s)
- Strong communication skills — you can explain data architecture to a CFO and integration requirements to a developer in the same day
Physical Requirements
- Sitting/Standing: Remaining in a stationary position for extended periods (sitting at a desk, standing at a counter).
- Reaching: Reaching for items on shelves or in cabinets.
- Lifting/Carrying: Moving boxes, files, or other office equipment up to 15 pounds.
- Using Hands/Fingers: Operating a computer, keyboard, mouse, and other office equipment.
- Vision: Close vision for computer work and detailed tasks.
- Fine Motor Skills: Using a mouse, keyboard, and other small office tools.
Travel Requirements
- Occasional travel < 5%
Work Environment
- Hybrid in office, Tuesday- Thursday
