Location: Montreal (Saint-Laurent)

Work Model: Hybrid – 1 day onsite, 4 days remote

Type of contract: permanent

Start Date: as soon as possible

Languages: English required - French an asset

Salary: 100,000$ to 120,000$

About the Role

Astek Canada is looking for an experienced Lead Data Engineer to join our client’s Data & Analytics team in the retail sector. In this senior, hands‑on technical role, you will lead the design, development, and operation of scalable data solutions that power analytics, reporting, and AI‑enabled applications across the organization.

You will help shape data engineering and analytics engineering best practices, influence architectural decisions, and ensure the reliability and performance of modern data platforms built on AWS.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience building production‑grade pipelines on AWS, strong expertise in data modeling, and a solid understanding of data platforms supporting analytics and AI use cases.

Your Responsibilities

1. Technical Leadership & Data Engineering Standards

  • Provide technical leadership across data engineering and analytics engineering teams.
  • Lead solution design, perform code reviews, and establish development best practices.
  • Mentor team members and create a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.

2. Design & Development of Data Pipelines

  • Design, build, and operate scalable ETL/ELT pipelines powering analytics and AI‑enabled applications.
  • Work extensively with AWS services:
  • AWS Data Lake, Glue, Redshift, Athena, Lambda, Apache Hudi, dbt, and more.
  • Build reliable, high‑performance data workflows for both batch and real‑time ingestion.

3. Data Modeling & Architecture

  • Design and maintain scalable data models across raw, curated, and consumption layers.
  • Ensure data consistency, governance, and alignment with lakehouse architecture patterns.
  • Define data contracts and collaborate with cross‑functional teams (analytics, product, engineering).

4. Data Operations, Quality & Observability

  • Improve pipeline performance, reliability, scalability, and cost efficiency.
  • Implement data quality checks, validation rules, monitoring, and observability practices.
  • Troubleshoot data processing and data quality issues, ensuring permanent fixes and root‑cause analysis.
  • Maintain documentation for data models, pipelines, and operational runbooks.

5. Collaboration & Project Participation

  • Work closely with analytics, application teams, and business stakeholders to gather requirements.
  • Deliver trusted datasets and data products supporting analytics and advanced AI use cases.
  • Contribute to platform standards, architectural evolution, and operational excellence.

What You Bring

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of hands‑on experience in data engineering or analytics engineering.
  • Proven experience building and operating production‑grade pipelines on AWS.

Technical Skills

  • Mastery of Python and SQL for data transformation, orchestration, and automation.
  • Strong experience with AWS services: S3 / Data Lake, Redshift, Glue, Athena, Lambda, Hudi, dbt.
  • Deep understanding of data modeling, data architecture, and lakehouse patterns.
  • Experience supporting production analytics or AI‑enabled applications.
  • Ability to define standards, perform code reviews, and lead technical initiatives.

Soft Skills
