Position Overview
Join our dynamic team as a Lead Database Administrator, where you will play a critical role in the design, administration, and optimization of enterprise database platforms. You will lead a talented team of database administrators to ensure the highest levels of database availability, security, backup, recovery, and capacity planning, all while working in a federal IT environment.
In this collaborative role, you will partner closely with application, infrastructure, and security teams to enhance database schemas, queries, and overall performance. You will be responsible for establishing robust standards, automation, and monitoring practices that uphold stability, auditability, and compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead comprehensive database administration tasks, including installation, configuration, patching, performance tuning, and troubleshooting across enterprise database platforms.
- Define and uphold standards for backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies in both on-premises and cloud-hosted database environments.
- Collaborate with development and analytics teams to design and enhance schemas, indexing, and queries for optimal performance and scalability.
- Oversee database security measures, control access, and conduct auditing in accordance with relevant policies and compliance requirements.
- Utilize monitoring and capacity-planning tools to analyze utilization patterns, identify performance risks, and propose improvement strategies.
- Manage and prioritize team tasks, offering mentorship and technical guidance while ensuring adherence to procedural and documentation standards.
- Support data warehousing, ETL, and integration initiatives by providing insights on data models, loading strategies, and database configurations.
- Create and maintain database standards and procedures to enhance consistency and automation in mission-critical service support.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 8+ years of hands-on experience with enterprise database systems including Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or PostgreSQL, along with leadership or team lead responsibilities.
- Demonstrated competency in database security, backup and recovery, disaster recovery planning, and performance tuning in complex multi-database environments.
- Experience with data warehousing, ETL processes, and data integration tools, and capabilities in troubleshooting and optimizing data pipelines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and the ability to coordinate across DBA teams while collaborating effectively with development, infrastructure, and security teams.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust investigation and work within a U.S.-only federal IT context, requiring U.S. citizenship.
- Willingness to travel 10-25% as needed for stakeholder engagement, implementations, and operational evaluations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in at least two major database platforms (e.g., SQL Server and Oracle) and familiarity with cloud database services.
- Advanced DBA or cloud database certifications from major vendors such as Oracle Certified Professional or Microsoft Azure Database Administrator Associate.
- Experience in implementing automation and infrastructure-as-code for database deployment, configuration, and maintenance.
- Background in leading database teams in regulated or audit-intensive environments, with responsibility for standards and compliance.
