Role Summary
The Support Engineer - Monitoring Lead will support systems engineering and enterprise monitoring activities for the Department of Transportation (DOT) environment. This role is responsible for configuring, managing, and optimizing monitoring platforms, integrating monitoring data sources, and supporting ITIL-based operational processes. The position requires hands-on expertise with enterprise monitoring tools and infrastructure observability to ensure performance, availability, and operational efficiency across a large-scale IT environment. The role is 100% onsite in Washington, DC and requires a Public Trust clearance.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in systems engineering activities including concept of operations formulation, requirements definition, system architecting, system analysis and design, validation and verification, system integration, and performance analysis.
- Assist in driving, standardizing, and managing a unified configuration management database.
- Collect and aggregate monitoring data to support ITIL processes including configuration, event, capacity, availability, demand, incident, and problem management.
- Assess and optimize monitoring capabilities to deliver accurate and actionable alerts for 24x7 operational systems.
- Create dashboards and visualizations to report current and historical system performance and service health.
- Configure and maintain monitoring dashboards to track health and performance across infrastructure components.
- Deploy, manage, and update monitoring Management Packs, connectors, and monitoring policies.
- Perform event correlation and filtering to streamline incident triage and ensure proper escalation to operational teams.
- Integrate data from third-party monitoring tools into the unified monitoring environment.
- Conduct proactive monitoring and root cause analysis to improve service reliability and operational performance.
- Provide solutions to systems engineering problems of moderate scope and complexity.
- Support systems engineering subject matter experts with technical and managerial recommendations affecting cost, schedule, and risk.
- Interact with supervisors, peer engineering teams, and occasionally external stakeholders to exchange and present technical information.
- Provide guidance to entry-level staff when required.

- Experience monitoring enterprise infrastructure including:

- Experience deploying and managing monitoring management packs and connectors
- Experience integrating monitoring systems with operational processes and dashboards
- Strong understanding of systems development lifecycle and systems engineering practices
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience supporting 24x7 operations environments
- Experience coordinating troubleshooting or acting as a technical lead during service outages
- Systems administration experience with Windows and/or Linux operating systems
- Experience integrating monitoring platforms with ServiceNow
- Experience automating monitoring alerts to generate service tickets
- Strong understanding of ITIL and ITSM frameworks
- ITIL certification (Foundations or higher)
- Experience developing executive-level dashboards and analytical reports based on performance and availability metrics
- Experience with visualization and computational analysis tools
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university
- Additional 5 years of experience may substitute for degree
- Minimum 7 years of related experience in monitoring or systems engineering environments
- Minimum 2 years of experience managing OpenText monitoring tools including AI Operations Management, Operations Bridge, SiteScope, and Optic
- Systems engineering experience supporting the systems development lifecycle
- Experience solving engineering problems of moderate scope and complexity
- Ability to work independently with limited direction
- U.S. Citizenship required
- Public Trust clearance required
- Ability to work 100% onsite in Washington, DC
