Job summary

This role is focused on safeguarding people and assets through fire suppression, rescue work, and emergency response. The firefighter may be called on to handle incidents such as structural fires, road accidents, floods, bomb-related situations, and dangerous spills, while also supporting disaster response efforts.

Key duties

• Carry out search-and-rescue and firefighting activities during fires, accidents, flooding, explosive incidents, and hazardous substance releases.
• Drive and operate emergency response vehicles, equipment, and related tools in a safe and effective manner.
• Use hand tools and powered equipment to ventilate buildings, set and climb ladders, remove hoses from the truck, connect them to hydrants and pumps, and work water hose lines of different sizes to extinguish fires.
• Handle pumps, foam-making equipment, boom nozzles, ground sweep nozzles, and similar firefighting systems.
• Complete salvage and overhaul work to reduce damage after an incident.
• Take part in routine drills and emergency preparedness training at the station.
• Respond to hazardous materials incidents in line with required procedures.
• Carry out additional tasks as assigned.

• Ability to assess situations quickly, make sound decisions under pressure, and work safely in dangerous conditions with significant physical effort.

• Other role-specific knowledge or skills may be needed depending on the contract or assignment.

Experience and education

• At least 1 year of experience in firefighting.
• High school diploma or an equivalent qualification.
• Associate’s degree is preferred.
• Firefighter II certification from IFSAC, DoD, or National Pro-Board.
• Hazardous Materials Operations certification from IFSAC, DoD, or National Pro-Board.
• Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting certification is required for roles with an aircraft firefighting mission and is not required where no such mission exists.
• Current state certification must be held and maintained.
• Preferred certifications include Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator ARFF, and Driver Operator MWS from DoD, ProBoard, or IFSAC.
• Telecommunicator I and II certificates are required.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• Additional education or experience may be requested based on the contract or assignment.

Physical and working conditions

• Must be capable of performing all duties associated with interior structural firefighting in line with OSHA 1910.156 requirements.
• Work location may be remote and living conditions may be uncomfortable.
• Expect long working hours and exposure to weather as well as hazardous conditions.
• Team members must be prepared to relocate or move on short notice and under difficult conditions.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of firefighting experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
• Associate’s degree preferred.
• Fire Fighter II certification from IFSAC, DoD, or National Pro-Board.
• Hazardous Materials Operations certification from IFSAC, DoD, or National Pro-Board.
• Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting certification where applicable to the mission.
• Current state certification, maintained throughout employment.
• Preferred certifications in Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator ARFF, and Driver Operator MWS.
• Telecommunicator I and II certificates.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to perform interior structural firefighting duties.
• Readiness for remote, physically demanding, and hazardous working conditions.
• Ability to move on short notice under adverse circumstances.
