The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Teacher is a high-energy, student-centered educator and advocate dedicated to closing the opportunity gap. This educator will lead the AVID Elective class, implementing the AVID College and Career Readiness Framework to prepare students-particularly those in the "academic middle"-for success in rigorous curriculum and post-secondary life that include planning and preparation for the 3 E's:

  • Enrollment into a 2- or 4-year college/university, enlistment into the military, or employment post high school through training and acquired certifications. This 10-month, 195 day Licensed Secondary position reports to the School Principal / AVID District Director.

  • Locations with Openings for the 2026-2027 School Year:
  • One (1) at Alexandria City High School - Minnie Howard Campus
  • One (1) at Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 School

Qualifications

The job of the AVID elective teacher requires that they have the ability and know-how to implement the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) College and Career Readiness Framework and philosophy to support student achievement for all, will use program curricular materials structures and routines with fidelity, and advocate on behalf of the students guided by the AVID mission and vision which is aligned to the ACPS Equity for ALL mission.

  • Education: A Bachelor's Degree from an Accredited College or University in Education or a Related Field Required, Master's Degree Preferred.
  • Certification & Licenses: A Valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching Provisional, Collegiate, or PostGraduate License, with an endorsement in English (preferred), History, Math, Science, Physical Education or another Middle School/High School endorsement area, or eligibility to obtain the Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement area upon hiring.
  • Other Qualifications:
  • Completion of (or willingness to attend) AVID Summer Institute training, July 2026.
  • Educational Leadership and/or Teaching Experience in the areas of Literacy, College and Career Readiness, Counseling, and/or Mentoring backgrounds preferred.

Key Responsibilities & Alignment to the ACPS Strategic Plan 2030:

  • Instructional Leadership (AVID Framework & Weeks at a Glance)
  • WICOR Implementation: Deliver daily instruction focused on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading and best practice teaching and learning pedagogy for strong Tier 1 instruction
  • Curriculum Fidelity: Utilize the AVID Weeks at a Glance (WAG) to ensure a balanced schedule of elective lessons, Socratic Tutorials, and motivational activities (guest speakers/field trips/leadership experiences through the lens of through PBL (Problem Based Learning)
  • Tutorial Facilitation: Oversee and supervise AVID tutors to lead inquiry-based study groups, ensuring students move beyond "finding the answer" to "understanding the process" lifting higher order thinking and increasing the cognitive demand for learning
  • Rigorous Preparedness: Monitor student performance in honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment courses, providing the "scaffolding" necessary for them to thrive in ACPS's most challenging tracks; learning to support opportunity knowledge through use of the local program of studies and academic advisement tools and platforms

2. Strategic Alignment (ACPS 2030: Equity for All)

  • Empowering Equity: Actively recruit and support students from underrepresented backgrounds, aligning with the ACPS goal of Hidden Gems identification and elimination of barriers to advanced coursework.
  • Social-Emotional Growth: Foster a "family" atmosphere in the classroom to support Student Well-Being, ensuring every student feels a sense of belonging, agency, and capacity to develop leadership skills through community service opportunities
  • Data-Driven Results: Track student GPA, attendance, and college enrollment data to measure progress for post-secondary planning and readiness.

3. College & Career Advocacy

  • Pathways Navigation: Guide students to better understand the relationship between course exposure, personal interests, and assets and goal development; develop opportunity knowledge around the college and university search and field trips exploration, college application process, FAFSA completion, financial aid and scholarship search.
  • Career Exposure: Connect classroom learning to real-world industry sectors and experts, which supports the ACPS 2030 initiative to provide diverse career-based learning experiences that also aligns to the Alexandria City High Schools Academies and pathways model
