Your Opportunity:

As an Assistant Head Nurse (AHN), you will play a key front line leadership role supporting safe, high quality, patient and family centered care within an inpatient rehabilitation setting. Working closely with the multidisciplinary team, you will coordinate daily operations, support staff and patient flow, and serve as an on shift clinical resource and role model. This role is ideal for an experienced rehabilitation or acute care nurse who thrives in a fast paced environment and is ready to take the next step into clinical leadership. Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the AHN supports the delivery of evidence informed care by coordinating day to day unit operations while maintaining a patient and family centered focus. You will provide leadership across staffing, patient flow, and quality and safety initiatives, while supporting staff engagement, development, and interprofessional collaboration. The AHN also provides first line support for patient and family concerns, ensuring timely resolution and appropriate escalation when required. The Assistant Head Nurse (AHN) supports daily unit operations by coordinating staffing, patient flow, and resource allocation to ensure safe, effective care delivery. The AHN acts as an on shift clinical resource and role model, providing guidance, coaching, and direct patient care as needed. This role promotes a respectful, collaborative team environment, supports conflict resolution, and facilitates strong interprofessional communication. The AHN also provides first line support for patient and family concerns, participates in quality improvement and safety initiatives, and supports staff development, onboarding, and the implementation of practice changes and digital workflows.

Description

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Minimum of three (3) years of recent and relevant clinical experience, preferably within an inpatient rehabilitation or acute care setting. Able to demonstrate on shift leadership experience (e.g., charge nurse or AHN). Provide direct patient care as required, may be required to take full patient assignment. Must follow It’s Your Move Principles and be required to engage in safe patient care and transfers including heavy lifting. Able to independently manage competing priorities and adapt to rapid changes.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in inpatient rehabilitation nursing, including caring for medically complex patients and supporting functional recovery. Leadership training or experience in staff development, facilitation, or change management. Relevant certifications, such as: CIHI Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Toronto Bedside Swallowing Screening Test (TOR BSST). Non Violent Crisis Intervention. Conflict Management.
